Moving companies

Hi all - I just posted an 'intro' the other day, but to recap, I'm getting married (in the US) and moving to the UK (to Scotland) in May/June, and I'd like to know if anyone has any recommendations for door-to-door moving companies. I've read back over a few pages of posts under this tag but only found one reference back a bit that linked to a ( Read more... )

I don't have a suggestion for a company...but we're moving a single pallet worth of boxes (1 square meter) and the *cheapest* price I could find to do that was £220.

Unless the items you're moving are heirlooms, I'd seriously consider NOT moving the furniture/household items and just buying again here. It may very well work out to be cheaper.

Thank you for the suggestion/advice. Some of the items do mean a great deal to me, so I do want to take them. Others, like my bed - well, if it would add as much to the cost to move it as to buy a new one when I get there, I may rethink sending it. But I have so little, it will hopefully not cost too much. Thanks for responding!

Something to consider when it comes to moving furniture - UK rooms are generally a lot smaller than US ones, so US furniture sometimes looks too big for the room - or won't fit at all! - when it gets here...

Yes - for example 10 foot by 12' would be considered a 'big' bedroom, but once you've put a king-size bed in it there's not much space!

Heh! I can just see me trying to fit a too-big bed into a too-small room, and the whole room just being BED. I'm glad for the warnings!

Thank you! My bed is pretty big (and has posts and top rails) so we've done some measuring to make sure it won't stick out the bedroom door or take up the whole room or not fit at all :-D. We've measured my biggest chair as well, to be sure it will fit through the narrower doorway. Hopefully we're good measurers!

Thanks for the warning - I imagine a lot of people find that out the hard way!
