I've been reading a bit of news lately on some suggestions that the UK develop some sort of loyalty oath, possibly to the Queen, to encourage citizenship, patriotism, all that stuff.
For the Brits here, what are your thoughts on this? Good idea? Mediocre idea? Complete waste of the government's time? I thought some of the suggestions from BBC readers were amusing.
For the Americans, what do you think of our Pledge of Allegiance? Does it encourage patriotism or is it just something odd we make kids memorize?
(And for anyone else who was raised Catholic, did you always want to make the sign of the Cross after saying the pledge? I sure did. ;) I don't function well in the morning.)
