Transport?

A few years a guy I knew at college (but am no longer in touch with) flew to Los Angeles and then travelled across California in an mobile home / RV. He didn't have to pay anything for vehicle at all, except petrol costs, because he got a deal from a company who needs vehicles to be driven from one place to another. They let you use the vehicle as long as you promise to transport it to a certain destination safely by a certain date. All you have to pay for is the petrol.
Does anyone know if these sort of deals still exist, and if so, where can I find out about them?
I will be going to California in April and am interested in a similar sort of deal.
Alternatively, can anyone reccommend any really good, cheap car or RV rental places in LA?
