I know, love. That "deviant" crack made veins throb in my forehead.
Also, I didn't know Oscar Wilde, merely as a case in point, was big on tofu.
People like that make me sputter with indignation and, on a good day, a smidgeon of pity.
Pffft! I went on a tofu binge a few years ago because a local Chinese place made THE best lightly-braised firm tofu cubes with homemade sweet-soy sauce. SO frickin' tasty. I must have had tofu 4-5 times a week or when budget permitted for 2-3 years in a row. I don't think girls got any more sexually appealing to me. Not that this would have been a horrible fate, by any means. As a tofu glutton for years on end, I have to say this urban legend has been BUSTED. :)
I wish I knew how to make lightly-braised firm tofu cubes with homemade sweet-soy sauce. I'd eat those every day. I could happily live on a diet of lightly-braised firm tofu cubes with homemade sweet-soy sauce, plain fried rice, broccoli, lima beans, corn, apple cinnamon oatmeal, steak, turkey, spinach, potato broccoli chicken soup, saag paneer, chicken tikka and prawn puri, tempura and sushi-with-fish-on-top (not keen on the rolls), chunks of sharp cheddar, skim milk, cheese pizza, cheese tortellini, hard scrambled eggs, shrimp, flounder, diet Cheerwine, Dr Chang's Long Life tea, White Russians, cloves, chocolate caramels, my homemade Xmas cookies from the secret recipes, turkey bacon, and the occasional Burger King cheeseburger with real Coca-Cola and fries (I covet those burgers with no apparent reason...the fake smoke flavour, probably). I mean, seriously, I could live with that narrow of a focus in my life. I miss the lightly-braised firm tofu cubes with homemade sweet-soy sauce. It would raise my current diet obsessions to a more lofty level of class. As it is, I do better than the above, but I can take or leave anything that doesn't appear on the list. Imagine how pathetic my life was when I voluntarily attempted strict vegetarianism with an anemia issue, a love of dairy-based foods, and me not liking / being able to process efficiently a wide variety of raw veg.
If I figure out how to make an edible tofu pizza, or tofu pasta, or the like, look out. I have managed to give myself food poisoning attempting to figure out the delicate art of edible tofu-based entree preparation. I will leave it to the masters. I resign myself to the fact that I am meant to be a baker, not a cook.
All that talk of lightly-braised firm tofu cubes with homemade sweet-soy sauce has made me incredibly hungry. My boss from graduate school was from China, so every holiday dinner we had at his house included some amazing tofu dishes that his wife would make. All of my attempts to recreate said dishes ended up with me spending a lot of money on ingredients that I deftly transformed into bowls of random mush. I didn't quite get to the level of giving myself food poisoning, but I certianly didn't come close to achieving the levels of culinary greatness to which I had aspired.
I do make a mean chicken tikka, though. And my naan always turns out well (especially considering I'm making it without the aid of a tandoor).
I believe that my ideal diet would consist of pad thai, crab rangoon, any pasta shape (other than spaghetti) covered in freshly grated parmesean, steak, chicken, mushroom soup, miso soup, tempura and nigiri sushi (I also prefer that over the rolls), sausage and black olive pizza, dark chocolate, soy milk, Kashi Heart to Heart cereal, rouladen and spätzle (I am German, after all), raclette, cheese curds, smoked string cheese, and wine. I'm not too picky, though, so that list is just what I could think of off the top of my head (and prior to my caffeine fully kicking in). I couldn't imagine trying to be a strict vegetarian at the moment, as I have way too much love for meat and dairy-based foods. So, I guess I'll just keep eating what I'm eating.
If I find any way to make tofu pizza or tofu pasta, I'll be sure to let you know. I'll trade that for some homemade Xmas cookies. :)
If I ever have a working oven again, I will definitely make my cookies. They are THE BOMB. Of course, there's no law against making them for other times of the year. My lemon- or nutmeg-enhanced sugar cookies, lemon squares, jammy shortbread thumb cookies and gingerbread rock. I also make a mean homemade berry pie, good cakes, and okay brownies. "Okay" because it's hard to improve on your average brownie, so it's cheaper and faster to buy someone else's.
Sounds like you're definitely good at baking. I haven't ventured into baking that much, although I did make Amish friendship bread last night. It turned out quite well, I must say. However, I've always been much better at cooking than baking. Hopefully this recent success will encourage me to experiment more, as all those cookies, cakes, and pies sound fantastic (especially as I sit here at work drinking coffee that is just begging for a tasty cookie to accompany it).
