I have a strange preoccupation with getting the mail. I absolutely love it. There's just something about walking out to a box in front of your house and there's things for you inside. When you think about it, the US Postal Service is truly an amazing thing.

I do things on purpose to make sure I get interesting things in the mail. I always send postcards from wherever I am in the world, to myself. Just a way of reminding myself of the places I've been. I write down a few thoughts or whatever's in my head at the time and I mail to myself. And usually they get so stuck in the mail that they don't arrive till long after I'm home. Then it's just cool, like a snapshot. "Here's where your head was at two months ago". I have whole photo albums just filled with postcards like that. And now I address them to Sean and JJ, so they can have their own books, things I think of that I want to share with them. Granted, they're not very international yet because I've been home for so long, but they will be.

I also have this long-running gag with Laura Lynne, where we find each other the most obnoxious, horrible, hilarious things and try to outdo each other. So every now and then I get strange things in the mail from her. The last one was a little statue of a fat guy who was bent over and he had pants, and if you pulled his pants down, he tooted "La Cucharacha" from his butt. I've ordered her a screaming Christmas tree. It looks like a normal little decorative tree but if you walk past it, it screams. It should freak her out. I hope it doesn't go off in the mail. That'd be embarassing.

And oh, the magazines. I subscribe to so many things. I never even read them all. I guess that's a big waste of paper, but I recycle? I have all the fashion magazines: your Harper's, your Vogue, your Elle, your Vanity Fair. The fun stuff like Cosmo and Glamour. I get TV Guide too, even though I never look at it, TiVo gets all my stuff for me. I do Time and Newsweek, trying to at least keep abreast of the news. Those tend to be the ones I never read . . . I love the gossip rags as much as the next person. So I have Us, and InTouch, and People. Highlights for the boys, even though they can't read yet. All the parenting magazines (and yes, they all do say not to drive with your kid in your lap). I even have random stuff like Bon Appetit, even though I never cook, Horse & Rider, though I don't ride. And those are just the magazines I can think of off the top of my head. I think a good way to tell about a person is to look at their magazine collection. Although the most you could tell from mine is that I like clothes and that I'm very ADD.

Plus your catalogs and your bills and your junk mail. Is it sad that sometimes I look through the junk mail?
