dr horrible on halloween nite

Nov 03, 2008 23:50

with me dressed as penny and shelby dressed as billy, we hit the sidewalk and made our way to the fairfax theatre for the charity screening of dr horrible's sing-a-long blog.  oddly there were fewer costumes for the short than we expected, but we did see a fair amount of capt hammers, red-coated dr horribles, a penny in her final dress, and a couple of cowboys.  there were various other halloween costumes such as the luke wilson/gwyneth paltrow royal tenenbaum characters (twice - we saw yet another pair at canters afterward - what's up with that?) and another popular couples outfit this year seemed to be bacon and eggs.

ray, one of the co-founders of filmradar w/ karie, is on the whedonopolis board, so we saw him outside.  also saw josh who is on the board and works at post logic on the same floor as me.  he recognized me and we exchanged hellos (although we have never formally met), but i have yet to see him at work to chat him up more.  robert had given me money to buy raffle tickets and a grab bag, so while we waited in line, we bought three grab bags, about 7 buttons, and the raffle tix.  the raffle tix paid off for both of us.  robert won a gift cert to sideshow collectibles and we won a serenity anthology.

we ended up in the 2nd row when we finally made it in the doors.  they were screening felicia day's the guild before dr horrible, so felicia popped onstage to say a few words before the show started.  during the 15 minutes intermission, i took the tickets out to the lobby to get our prizes.  while i was out there, joss walked thru the door, and i was embarrassed as everyone around me stopped, stared, and i heard someone say, "*gasp* it's him!"  ray later told me they were only expecting felicia.  joss looked only slightly uncomfortable at the fandom as he continued past the crowd toward the theatre.

we had all these cute little "rocky horror" type things in the grab bag for the sing-a-long, like minature "lacy gently wafting" curtains, a penny for penny, a branch for hiding behind the bush, bubbles for the laundromat, a horse fingerpuppet for the bad horse letters, a popper for the backfiring death ray, capt hammer's dry cleaning bill, etc.  was very cute and wow, i am way behind on knowing the songs like the fans do.  i had forgotten how obsessed we can be about certain things - people were singing and reciting along complete with perfect tone, pitch, and inflection.  now that's dedication!  when the tragedy occurred near the end, the guy behind us shouted "you suck, joss!" really loud, making not only the audience laugh but his friend say, "dude, he's like 10 rows behind us."  the guy responds, "i know."

it was great seeing dr horrible on the big screen and singing along to it.  afterward, of course, although totally unplanned, joss took the stage w/ felicia, his brothers, the asian groupie who was dressed as "a chinese," and a guy draped in black with neon piping outlining a stick figure on his front for his costume.  knowing it could only be one of two people, and one more than the other, we watched nathan fillion take off the black head mask and heard the girls scream.  they told us they didn't know what to say other than they had just finished the sing-a-long commentary for the dvd, and nathan's costume was an inside joke that would be explained on the commentary.  they also pointed out alan tudyk in the audience who chose to stay in his seat since he wasn't involved.  then we all had to get out b/c the midnite screening had to get going.
