My Australia - wanna be on TV?

Jul 30, 2010 14:55

I'm about to be a host on ABC's My Australia, a TV travel show where the idea is that a recent migrant (like me) experiences parts of Aussie life that we've not really done before. I'll be doing 3 episodes (tentatively) and we're currently researching people to join us.

Here's what we're planning:

Ep 1: ROLLER DERBY
Quest: To learn roller derby skills ( Read more... )

As far as guerilla knitting goes, there was that business with all the "statue cosies" in the city at the start of winter which the news certainly ascribed to guerilla knitters.

I don't mean to discourage what you're doing in anyway, but how do any of these activities constitute part of 'Aussie' life?

I understand not wanting to do stereotypical Crocodile Hunter stuff, but really, i don't see how these experiences would deliver any useful or real information about Australia to viewers in an overseas market.

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking that.

Ask the producers. When we applied to host the show, we were asked to come up with a few ideas of things that would be interesting to base episodes around - that was part of the selection criteria. They told us that adventure sports were overdone, and since I come from a performance/creative background I pitched ideas that were more in that vein. They liked the ideas and picked me as one of the hosts based on them ( ... )

knitting would be awesome. try to find out who the did the yarn bombing approved by the council from earlier this year.

poledancing - check out the pole fitness studios about the place. probably the closest you can get in terms of showing that stuff on tv without having to deal with some countries' strict censorship laws :D
song: "You can leave your hat on?"

which overseas market are we looking at anyway? these eps sound very US-centric rather than say Asian or UK market. Those crew would fascinated by nature or outback things (dry boat racing ftw!)

They already have a zillion adventure/outback type episodes and specifically asked us to pitch something different (part of the audition process). As I come from a performance/creative background I went with that route.

The presenters are mainly Asians, and the target market is mostly Asia-Pac and possibly Africa/South America.

Re songs: they have people who specifically compose stuff for them for rights purposes, so I'll likely have to consult their catalog for that. My burlesque teacher is a poledance pro so I'm hoping to roll her in.

The "guerilla knitting" project was by Rogue Cosie; my best friend did some photography for them the night that it was installed, before it potentially got wrecked by people being idiots ( ... )

Yay actual names! Thanks for those, I'll follow them up.

Funny thing is that I was thinking of the Zombie Walk as a possible backup in case none of these pan out. Zombies as a tourism draw, nifty.

For the pole dancing, you could try contacting Kym McGowan via Australian Pole Dance.
