Riots in the streets!

Copenhagen - the city I live in - is on fire. Squatters in a youth house in the centre of the city have been evicted. For two nights now the streets have been on fire. Last night three cars outside my house were burned out and Thursday evening I had to run with a friend and two small children through tear-gas to get home. The children aged two and five were crying and were very scared. When I got home my bedroom was filled with teargas as one of the windows was open.

It makes me so sad to see the city I love treated like that. However it makes me even sadder to live in a city that has no space for a place like that. I never came there. I do not have much in common with those who did. But I believe in diversity and I believe in a society with room for all - also those who are different. I hope a solution will be found, although right now one does not seem likely. I’m afraid we will many more nights with streets on fire - and I’m afraid Copenhagen is loosing part of its soul.
