caching up from yesterday first - Eri and Wren agility

May 31, 2011 12:39

It's been a really rough couple of months.  But I'll catch up eventually.  I did want to post a bit about Eri and Wren and their agility work since I'm pleased theyre continuing to make progress despite my lack of effort on that front.  I'll call it latent learning and be happy!

Eri's jumping is coming along really well.  He's doing a great job of keeping bars up if he knows where he's going.  He's also sequencing nicely on straight lines, curves and even pinwheels.  Over the weekend we worked pinwheels a little more aggressively and I'm really excited that he's doing them with me standing behind the plane of the jumps at the midpoint even when the curve is greater than 180 degrees.  Front crosses are good if I give him enough space, but he's a BIG dog and he just doesn't turn tightly at all yet.  I don't want to push it and lose the ability to stretch out like I did with Brin.

Teeter is coming along slowly but surely.  He's dying to do more DW and AFs so I'm deliberately not letting him and only doing the terminal behavior (2o2o).  It's definitely building desire and obstacle focus for contacts.

Weaves...the jury is still out.  These just aren't computing for him.

Wren has finally decided that jumps CAN be taken at 20".  If she had a stay we'd be working on sequencing.  But she doesn't, so we're still doing baby stuff along with stay, heel and side.  She offered to pull the teeter down with her front feet for the first time on Saturday and didn't even run away in a panic when it banged, but stayed on it and waited for her treat.  Big progress!  Weaves and contacts are going to be the big challenge since she isn't here often enough, but she learns as quickly as Brinny does and so I think once she's over the initial figuring it out stage, we'll have those pretty quickly.  Then I'll be stuck dealing with her whirling and barking because I haven't had time to teach the handling bits.  In two days every two weeks, there's only so much I can do - good thing she's such a quick learner.

Overall...I'm very happy with the puppies ;-)
