Olympics ice dancing - yay!

Let me get this out of the way: WHEEEEE!  YAY FOR CANADA!!!

I'm so very pleased that the Canadian team won the gold in ice dancing.  They absolutely deserved it. Overall they had the three best skates of the competition.  It's been a long time since I watched a competition where the top skaters all did a really good job and it just came down to judging what they put out there.

Now OTOH....I really wish the dancers would stop wearing white.  It's not effective on the ice and frankly, isn't all that becoming on the dancers even off the ice!  And I would very much appreciate it if they would chose music that had some dynamic in it rather than (as some of the choices) a very flat piece that, while it had a good rhythm and flow, just basically left me flat.  All the good skating in the world won't make up for a really bad piece of music and fortunately none of the teams that were televised last night had a REALLY bad piece of music, but I think the Canadians would have been better served by something more animated.

I am just so thrilled for both the gold and silver medal teams.  It was just unutterably cute to watch Scott Moir bounce on the podium while singing "Oh Canada" like he just couldn't contain himself any more.  After all these years of skaters being so calm and collected about winning or losing, I got all sorts of warm fuzzies from both teams getting so excited.

I do think Belbin/Augosto should have passed the Russians in the free skate.  They had better technical content and execution.  But as Weir said earlier in the week, it's not politically advantageous to the IOC to have one country take two (or three) medals - reduces the number of countries who can send three teams to next year's worlds, for example.  So it's in their best interest (IOC's) to spread the wealth around.  The Russians' set pattern dance really wasn't that much better than the next three (and their costuming was hideous), so I was fuming about their lead after the first skate!  Three points up over B/A and an additional two from the free dance - excuse me???  Oh well, no one asked my opinion.

On to the ladies tonight...I'm not nearly as excited about that as I was about the dancing though :-)
