Stephen and I are going to dig in Orvieto in July! We bought our plane tickets the other day, so there's no going back now.
Stephen will be leaving May 6 for Cetamura (FSU's dig site) and he is going to be there until I arrive, which will be July 5. He's going to meet me at the airport in Rome and then we hope on a train for Orvieto, which is an hour north of Rome. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I'm going to pay for everything but things will work out.
Orvieto is beautiful, as far as I can tell from looking at pictures and video footage. The city itself is on top of a mesa but the dig site is about a 25 minute walk away in the low-lying area around the plateau. We will dig and work in the lab Monday-Friday and have the weekends free. The program provides housing and food. I'm so excited to go and see Italy and to dig and play with really old religious material finds. Woo!
Yesterday was my birthday, so a bunch of us decided to go to a bar after our long afternoon class, including our professor. A lot of people came out for a couple of drinks and it was a lot of fun. I've been really lucky here and have met a lot of really great people. Some of these people will be here for the next few years, but some are leaving after this semester. It will be really hard to say goodbye because I've become fast friends with so many people in my program. Hopefully I'll get to see them at future conferences.
Well, I have put off my paper long enough and must really get to work.
