School. What can I say? It's difficult and busy and interesting and completely frightening. I've met some really nice people in my program. Stephen and I actually went out with two of my new friends and their wives to dinner and a movie. There are only three other women in my program. Two of them are working on their dissertations so they are hardly ever around but I have gotten to chat with them and they are very sweet. The other girl I have a couple of classes with. She is a second year Masters student and is therefore very good to go to when it comes to advice on class work and how to approach different professors. Most everyone in my program is either married or seriously dating someone and most of them are at least five years older than I am, which makes the atmosphere a little more grown-up. Stephen's program is mostly younger, single students and it certainly feels like that. I guess both situation has it's benefits.
I do have an office, or rather I should say a desk. There is one office for all of the Religions of Western Antiquity (RWA) students, which means that we have one really large room with fifteen desks. It's actually really nice because that way you're forced to get to know each other and you can talk about projects and borrow books and so forth more easily. When school started I was feeling particularly anti-social, so I think my office situation has been really helpful in getting me to open up and get excited about being a social creature again.
All of my professors are completely brilliant and helpful and intimidating. The other students in my classes are so smart. They always make me feel intellectually lazy.
I'm taking Latin for the first time. I studied it over the summer so that I could play catch-up and join the 3rd semester class. It has been going all right so far. I have my first major test on Monday, so wish me luck.
I'm feeling a lot of pressure right now because I have to turn in a term paper abstract and preliminarily bibliography on Tuesday for my Christianity class. This would be nerve-wracking under ordinary circumstances, but this class kind of epitomizes my interests and the professor for the class is my adviser. Consequently I have been killing myself trying to come up with an interesting and not completely over-done topic. As of right now, I think I'm going to investigate the cultural history of Syria in the first and second centuries in an attempt to better understand why Marcionitism/Marcionism was the predominate form of Christianity there at the end of the second century. This could either produce something very enlightening or be totally dry and fruitless. Let's hope for the former.
Well, I should go and study. I hope everyone in the LJ world is doing well.
Oh, I almost forgot, I will be back in Lawrence/KC for the last two weeks of December and maybe a little into January. I hope to be able to get a drink or five with everyone that will be in Lawrence.
Later.
