Day 10: Write a letter to Christopher
Dear Chris,
I think I’m going to start this letter by saying, ‘You’re a genius’. I would probably hate to live even a day in your head, but you’re still a genius. It makes sense to me to tell the story of a piece of music if you’re skating to it, but to the skating world for some reason that was unheard of until you and Jayne came along. And when you did come along you stuck to your guns every single time and as a result, changed the shape of your sport. It takes guts to do that and to keep doing it for so many years, but I’m very glad you did!
You’re also an annoyingly good skater. Not just as a partner with Jayne, but on your own too. I’ve never been a girly girl who’s wanted to do ballet and liked dance and yet I could sit and watch you dance for hours. I can only describe it as an elegant rawness, but it’s wonderful. Obviously, as one half of a partnership, we don’t get to see you dance on your own much but when you do (e.g. Six Gestures) it’s fantastic.
Simply listening to you talk about skating and choreography is something special as well. You have such a passion for what you do and for every aspect of skating that it’s really quite difficult not to be pulled into that on some level. You’ve been through some rubbish in your life over the years and I think that’s only made your passion for skating and your desire to keep creating these stories and pictures stronger. I know you once said that skating is who you were, but really I think skating is who you will always be.
The most important thing though is that you’re just you. You’ve got a passion and a talent but underneath it all you’re just a regular guy who will go that extra mile for his friends or family and who appreciates what he’s got. You can have a laugh, you can have a laugh at yourself, and you have a very big heart. Those are pretty special qualities so please never lose them and never stop being you.
Much love,
Brina.
