I was going to keep this quiet for a while but I ended up telling someone earlier today so I figured I may as well post it up here and make it public.

I've decided to start training for the London Marathon 2011. You might think it odd that I'm not trying to train for the 2010 marathon but I have my reasons. The London Marathon was the one day of the year when Mum left us to fend for ourselves and did something for herself. She would make herself breakfast at 8.30am when the coverage started and sit there until lunchtime when it finished. If we wanted something from her then that was tough, it would have to wait until after the marathon coverage finished.

I used to watch it most years with her and for as long as I can remember I've wanted to run it myself. I tried for a place in the ballot a few years ago after I'd run my half marathon but didn't get through.

I posted a couple of weeks ago that this month is ten years since my mum's cancer took hold and was diagnosed. April 2011 (when the London Marathon is) will be ten years since she died. It feels right that I train for the marathon for the length of time she fought cancer. It'll give me an incentive to keep training and hopefully when I come to ask for sponsorship it'll be a nice little story to encourage people to give me money. Naturally I'll be running for Cancer Research (either through a balloted place or through a charity place) but I may also split some of the sponsorship with Arthitis Research because this will be a personal achievement too.

By telling people of my motives this early on I'll either make a fool of myself if I've bitten off more than I can chew, or hopefully, I can rely on support from everyone who knows about it to help boost me that bit more over the next 16 months. It's a good stretch of time to pace myself with my training so I don't see any reason why I can't achieve this. And I give everyone permission to give me a virtual kick up the backside if I start slacking off at any stage.

Just been for my first official training run and it was better than I thought so so far, so good :)
