The room is entirely too bright, florescent tubes bleaching out everything they touch.
Jo carefully unties the hospital gown, working the small knot with her fingers. Her hands are cold against his skin and he hisses when she starts to slide the gown down his shoulders.
“Sorry,” she says.
Dean tips his chin out in a nod and dresses quietly. His movements are slow and pained and Jo touches her fingers to the inside of his wrist, wanting to help. He gives another quick nod and Jo loops the buttons on his shirt not much faster than him. Her eyes stay on the blood stains, dried and etched into the material. Not all of it’s his.
“Let’s go,” he says.
“Go?”
He curls his hand around her elbow. “We need to go.”
“We’re giving up?” she asks, confused.
Dean doesn’t answer. He stands on unsteady legs and Jo holds her hand on his back, matching his steps as they walk out to the parking lot.
They stop at the first motel they see, the steering wheel unfamiliar beneath Jo’s fingers.
It’s one room, with one bed, and the same bright florescent lights as the hospital. There’s a cheap, vinyl blind covering a window that looks into nothing. Jo pulls it up, it doesn’t lift any higher than an inch, and a stream of sunlight cuts across the wall.
“Oak Ridge,” Dean says. He throws his bag down on the floor.
Jo turns around. “What?”
“Tennessee. That’s where we’re going tomorrow.”
She sits on the bed and Dean lowers himself beside her. Jo pulls at his shirt, gauze already bled through. Twenty-two stitches from Nurse Ronda, and Dean probably pulled half of them. Jo plucks at the gauze and sighs.
“What’s in Tennessee?”
Dean presses his lips to her forehead.
“Sam.”
