Postponement of Graduation. Again...

So my failure of Jap 101 in the autumn semester was a setback. But I can live with it, tis no biggie.

I decided against doing it again in the spring, as I really wanted a break from Japanese...

Summer, I was hoping to take Jap 101 and Jap 102, but the classes filled up *ridiculously* fast. As in: within 30min of registration, the classes were full. So I've given up on them. I could check to see if there's a waiting list, or I could just check them daily to see if they open up.

In addition to them, I must do Jap 103, and also 15 300/400-level courses. This means (including the two above) that I have 18 courses to do in order to graduate. The Jap courses must be done sequentially.

I can do 4 courses over the summer (max that I'm allowed), and then (at most) 5 in the autumn, followed by 5 in the spring, making me finish in May 2010. This scenario requires me to watch the Japanese courses, hawklike, to see if an opening appears in the next two weeks and to sign up for a waiting list. Then I get to do Japanese at 9am, 4 days a week. I will also do a 300 level English course (counts for 2 300 level courses). This is the best case scenario.

The alternative is to do 4 300-level courses in the summer. In the fall there is a single 101 Jap class, but it conflicts with a mandatory-for-my-degree Philosophy course. This course is *only* offered in the fall semester of each year. So I must do this course in the fall, else I can't graduate until May 2011 (take the course as my last course in the fall of 2010).

So then I can think about taking Jap 101 in the spring of 2010. This puts 102 and 103 into the summer. There are 2 compressed semesters in the summer (which is how I can do 101 and 102 this summer, as they can't be concurrent). Taking this summer as the paradigm-case (there's no reason that I can see for UBC to do things differently each summer), 102 is not offered in the first compressed semester, which means I'd have to take it in the second compressed semester, which puts Japanese 103 into the fall of 2010, and my graduation into May of 2011.

Commence pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth.

So the plan, as of this afternoon, is to watch (hawklike) the enrolment in Japanese 101 and 102 for this summer. Then tomorrow, go to the Asian Studies building and seek out a waiting list. Regardless of how those go, I shall be attending the Japanese 101 class on the 4th of June until I'm told to leave...

Irksome.
