The best media tie-in novel CYA response EVER

Jun 09, 2009 00:07

I just today finished reading the three existing Supernatural media tie-in novels and I just have to say that these three are, happily, leaps and bounds better than most media tie-ins I've read ( Read more... )

rant: pro-authors, randomness, fandom: supernatural

IMO, they're definitely worth the price of admission, though Bone Key is without a doubt my favorite of the two.

Nevermore has a fantastically original plot idea, has some great comedic moments (like the orangutan's name), and some really neat OCs.

It's weakness, I think, lies in the fact that there might be just a bit too much focus on those OCs (and the whumper in me cries in outrage that he put one of the OCs in a situation I'd have much preferred to have been one of the boys), and his Dean is maybe just a bit too... what's the word I'm looking for... ditzy? He does occasionally come across as a bit of a blockhead with ADHD, but it's really not all that bad. I've read so many fanfics that make him so *so* much worse.

Bone Key flies against a rather commonly accepted SPN "factoid" (if this isn't canon, it's one of the strongest fanons I've ever come across) in that Dean likes Florida. But it's set during S3 and he doesn't spend the entire damn thing having them both angst and mood and mope around about the deal (which is one of the reasons I avoid S3 fic for the most part). I mean, yes, he does mention it - kinda has to - but it's not the whole point of the story. And Dean does something at the end that had my jaw on the floor, quite literally. I'd so have loved to have seen that in an ep... still would, actually.

His Sam is stronger than his Dean, at least in Nevermore, but I found them both to be pretty true in Bone Key. Neither one is focused on to the exclusion of the other, they're both important to the plot, and they both have major parts to play. Now, for me... yeah, maybe there's not enough whumpage (though Witch's Canyon took care of that for me ;P), but they're strong stories and I enjoyed them both.

You're right about Witch's Canyon, though. Good Lord, that book was incredible.

Well I have definately learned to trust you when it comes to media opinions, especially in the being frank department, lol, so all righty then. *grin* Now I have two more books to read.

Crap. Now I have to convince my dad to let me use his credit card again, cause nobody on ebay accepts checks anymore! Grr. That's gonna be hard. I need those books! Where'd you get them?

I picked them up the last time I went to Barnes & Noble, so if you're close enough to one to do that, you might do that instead of going the internet route. The salesgirl was a Sam!girl, too, which was great. I bought them a few days after the finale, and we ended up standing in the aisle talking about it. :)

Hey, we're like 25 miles from Baton Rouge. There's half a dozen of them. :P I just didn't know they had the SPN books, lol. Mom hates going to BR though, so I'll call the specific store we're going to first to make sure they have them there...so I don't waste a trip it's going to take a lot of begging to get in the first place. LOL. Cause cash I have! Whee! Thanks!
