Well, the wind has finally changed direction, blowing the majority of the smoke away from us. Last night I woke-up around 3:00AM and actually saw stars for the first time in days. It was lovely.
Hopefully, this will make everything better for everyone. In talking to various customers last night, many people seemed to find the smoke upsetting on

That might also have to do with a couple of close calls with fire I've had over my life, too. The first was when I was a kid and there was a severe drought in Ohio - no rain over the entire summer (sometime in the late 80's, I don't remember the exact year). We were put on water restrictions so everybody's lawn died from lack of water. Then we had a lightening storm at the end of the summer that hit a tree in the neighbor's yard and set the tree on fire, which subsequently blew up into the rest of the lawn and trees behind their house. Luckily, the wind was in our favor so we (and the neighbors) were safe, but I remember watching all of this - including the lightening strike, the fire and the ensuing firetrucks - from my bedroom window.
The other close call is when I was driving my first car down the highway - a $300 piece of shit Pontiac - and it caught on fire. Apparently it had been on fire several minutes before I noticed - when the passenger side mirror suddenly fell off. It had melted off, I realized, when I noticed all of the flames coming out of that side of the car. Then I got to pull over, rescue my best friend - who tried to go out through the flaming door on his side instead of coming out of the driver's door - and most of my possessions, which I happened to have crammed into the car as I was moving back to Cleveland - and then watch the car burn to a crisp. Though I lost a mattress and all of my kitchen stuff, aside from smoke inhalation we were safe at least. It definitely scared me off of American cars...
