I listen to radio@Netscape Plus all day long, usually the Classic Holiday channel at the moment. The way they work is that they allow you to rate the songs you hear, and the ones with the highest ratings are the ones played most frequently. Know what song I hear at LEAST once, probably two-three times an hour?
We Need a Little Christmas
Haul out the holly;
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again.
Fill up the stocking,
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now.
For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute,
Candles in the window,
Carols at the spinet.
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute.
It hasn't snowed a single flurry,
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry;
So climb down the chimney;
Put up the brightest string of lights I've ever seen.
Slice up the fruitcake;
It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough.
For I've grown a little leaner,
Grown a little colder,
Grown a little sadder,
Grown a little older,
And I need a little angel
Sitting on my shoulder,
Need a little Christmas now.
Haul out the holly;
Well, once I taught you all to live each living day.
Fill up the stocking,
But Auntie Man, it's one week from Thanksgiving Day now.
But we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute,
Candles in the window,
Carols at the spinet.
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute.
It hasn't snowed a single flurry,
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry;
So climb down the chimney;
Put up the brightest string of lights I've ever seen.
Slice up the fruitcake;
It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough.
For we need a little music,
Need a little laughter,
Need a little singing
Ringing through the rafter,
And we need a little snappy
"Happy ever after,"
Need a little Christmas now.
Need a little Christmas now.
Probably not that version, but whatever. Close enough. Now, it has a catchy tune, I'll grant you. But read the words. The words are not cheerful. The words are all pointing to escapism. The words say "the world is horrible, no one wants to think about it, so put up some stockings and eat some damned cake and don't think about it - sorry if it's not Christmas yet, but we don't have time to friggin' wait for snow and shyt, we need to be cheerful *rightthisminute*". How incredibly depressing!!
I vote for Santa Baby, dammit. Let It Snow. I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas. Baby, It's Cold Outside. T'was The Night Before Christmas. Enough of this bullshyt of trying to "escape" out of the every day and "into" the hearts and candy canes and big gigantic elaborately wrapped presents of the secular Christmas season. The every day isn't going anywhere because we start putting glass balls and red ribbons on everything that stands still.
And what the hell is the big rush in life now-a-days? For heaven's sake - SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!!!!!!! Chew your eggnog. Breathe a little. Stop and smell the pine tree you spent too much money on!!!!!!!!!! And go ahead and watch whatever crap TV shows you adore and pay your bills while you're sniffing it. The actions of enjoying the season and living life are NOT mutually exclusive.
I don't even know how to get to what I'm getting at, so I should shut up now and go back to my consumers. It was just depressing, which meant of course, I had to come and share the darkness. ;o) I know. You all love me more immensely with every passing second. *giggles* I am simply so very loveable.
