The days had dragged and dragged. Endless hours at shopping centers, pouring over scripts and lyrics, chatting up friends until they grew sick of hearing his voice and still Kibum had come back to an empty apartment too early in the day. Wandering around aimlessly into the wee hours, sprawling on the couch beside the phone awaiting a call, cooking dinner for two only to toss half out.
Kibum was a sorry sight, but by the final day he was bouncing with anticipation for his honey's return.
“Really, babe?”
His buzz dies off when he takes in the sorry sight of what his man wants to pass off as a present.
Jonghyun motions with wide eyes towards the object. “Don't you like it?”
Kibum fingers the cheap rubber creation. “Am I suppose to?”
“Of course! I picked it out just for you - “
“Jonghyun, be honest. You picked this up from the street vendor before walking through the door.”
“... It's cute, isn't it?”
With a dramatic sigh, Kibum brings the rubber duck closer to his face for examination. “I guess … Look, Jjong, I'm just glad you're back,” he relents, tossing the toy off to some distant corner to be forgotten.
Jonghyun happily gathers Kibum into his arms to share a deep, passionate kiss.
They hardly realize they've kept the front door open until the neighbor stands gaping in the door way with a scandalized expression.
That was just the beginning to the rubber duckies. As much as Kibum would have loved to just forget the whole ordeal, Jonghyun found it to be a “charming” idea to bring back a different rubber duck every time he went away on a business trip or across oceans to record some new hit song. In no time, a collection of the yellow things, all dressed in different themed attire, cluttered up their book shelf.
“I wish you would just forget the damn things,” Kibum moans as a duck clad in a black and pink boa is added to the mix, “They're so … tacky.”
Jonghyun plants a kiss on his stubble ridden cheek. “My love for you is a dozen tacky rubber ducks,” he sings.
“You're the worst.”
“Then pack up and leave.”
“Maybe I will.” Kibum sighs. “If anything, to escape those ducks.”
Jonghyun's laughter trails behind him as he goes into the bathroom to let the shower wash away the aches of travel.
“I'm so proud of you.”
Kibum chuckles from his position, pinned beneath Jonghyun. “It's not that big of a deal.”
“Not that big of a deal?” scoffs Jonghyun. “My baby's dream came true.”
Melting under the sweet kisses his boyfriend is placing all along his face, Kibum lets a soft smile form. “Okay, so this is probably the single best thing to ever happen to me.”
“You're clothing line is better than me?”
“Yes.”
Jonghyun pinches his cheek. “Getting fresh?” he asks, sticking his tongue out.
Kibum smacks his side. “You know you're number one, stop making me say it!”
Jonghyun laughs triumphantly. “I like to hear it. Now, here's a little gift, head designer.” There's a moment of suspense as he fumbles around the side of the bed for his present. “Ta-da!”
Kibum's face falls. “Really?”
“Look, it even says “diva” on it!” Jonghyun exclaims, pressing the rubber duck closer to Kibum's eyes.
Taking the rubber duck gingerly, Kibum nods. “It's really nice, but … “
Taking it from his hand and setting it aside, Jonghyun grins wickedly. “Oh, don't worry, that's not the only celebrating we're doing.”
He doesn't know when it occurred, but he's stopped stashing the ducks away when friends come to visit. It's a little enjoyable to explain the story behind each one of the little fellows.
Oh God, when did Kibum get so cheesy?
“I think I'm getting old, Jjong,” Kibum admits one evening when he's curled against his partner.
They both have their glasses on, the lamp lighting their books. Jonghyun peers through the reading lenses at his soul mate.
“They say people only get finer with age.”
“That's wine, you ass.”
Jonghyun chuckles. “Kibummie, you're flawless no matter what your age. Don't stress about it.”
“True … “ he agrees, book forgotten in his lap. “At least I'm not turning the big four-oh like Jinki.”
“Hey!” Jonghyun protests. “That'll be me next year!”
Kibum gags. “You're so horribly ancient, why am I with you?”
Dipping down, Jonghyun catches those ever plump lips in his own. “Because you had a thing for older men - now you just can't get rid of me.”
“Ugh,” Kibum groans while pushing the older man's face away, “Go sing another ballad.”
As if he couldn't resist the idea, Jonghyun begins crooning one of his latest works. The vocals are still as rich and powerful as they had been back when the two had met as trainees, only, Kibum could sense an aged softness behind the words. A sincerity that only an experienced lover could hold.
Leaning back to rest against Jonghyun's chest, Kibum takes off his glasses to allow his eyes a chance to relax as well. He catches sight of the ducks.
“We should box those things up,” he says out of habit.
Jonghyun nuzzles his cheek. “How about you can box them up as soon as you get rid of me?”
“Damn, looks like I'm stuck with the little buggers … “
