Somehow I have managed to escape the seductive forces of technology and consumerism in one respect -- I have not owned a computer since 2004. This was a fact of which I was quite proud. But in the end, it seems, resistance is futile.
Last night at midnight I bought a Dell Netbook. Cue the ominous Darth Vader soundtrack...
While my haughty inner Luddite is wailing "What have you DONE???" my more pragmatic self is pretty happy about this change. For a few more months of my spring internship, I was willing continue squeezing in computer time when sensible people have gone home, often working on lesson plans late at night so I can use the office computer. But since I've been invited back for Round Two of this internship in the fall, well, that scenario started to look a lot less appealing. I have often complained to myself in the past weeks, "Why can't you freakin' manage your time anymore?" and finally came to the realization that having my own computer would really, really help.
Doesn't hurt that I got a screamin' deal on a nice reputable-brand netbook ($249).
