Seven swans a swimming

When we were leaving Frogholm today ravena_kade suddenly shouted “Seven swans a swimming!”

She saw swans on the river. I glanced over and lo and behold, she was right. Though the winter-bare trees I could just glimpse a small flotilla of swans gliding serenely down the river. They were unmistakable with their large fat bodies and long necks.

In the twelve years since I bought Frogholm I’ve seen plenty of ducks and geese on the Mighty Mighty Merrimack. (Quite frankly, more Canada geese than I'd like, darn pooping machines!) The occasional egret has flown past. But I can’t ever remember seeing a single swan, let alone a bevy of swans.

Yes, I Googled it, that’s the correct collective now for swans according to the Audobon society. The others, according to Wikipedia, are bank (if they’re on the ground), drift, eyrar, game, herd, lamentation, sownder, team, wedge (in flight) and whiting.

I saw them again when I was coming home from dropping her off. As I drove across the bridge, I could just see a group of bulky white birds floating on the river, well upstream of the bridge.
