And so it begins - The Job Hunt

And so it begins, the Job Hunt, and about four weeks earlier than I thought I'd start.

I got up this morning and finished writing the two cover letters for the jobs I was going to apply to. I sent one off to a former co-worker (not the recruiter that called me yesterday). And then I sent off a query letter and my resume to the recruiter from Mystery Inc. who contacted me back in May to ask if they were still looking for a TW?

Sending resumes out into the wild always sort of feels like this to me:

[Mork - Fly! Be free!]

We’ll see what comes of it.

The recruiter from Mystery Inc. already called me back this morning. They’re hired two people to replace retiring writers, but they’re still looking for another writer. He said they have so much trouble finding good matches that they’re pretty much always looking, as in, if someone turns out that looks like a good fit, they snap them up. He asked some questions about my previous jobs, how long I’d stayed, what sort of work I’d done. And he asked for my salary requirements, but I have learned not to discuss that number too early (I don’t want to screw myself by being either too high or too low). I said I prefer to ask what a company’s range is for a position, because my number is negotiable. He repeated what I’d heard from other folks, that they’re very generous with salary, and mentioned the low end of their range (which would be a raise for me, all the more reason NOT to mention my number too early!). So I feel like we’re already playing the game, and my resume hasn’t even been submitted yet. I also have to dig up two or three “technically gnarly” writing samples. I’ve got to think on that a bit. I’ve got some ideas, but I need to poke around in my portfolio folder and see what I’ve actually got copies of.

And I suppose I need to start hunting for a new job interview outfit. I’m pretty sure my arse is currently about 20 - 30 pounds too big for my current fabulous job interview suit. *sighs*

recruiters again, job hunting, julie's summer vacation
