Good News Friday - Outlander Edition

The stretch of construction that I just can’t avoid because it’s on my main route to and from everywhere is finally done. The road finally got paved last week (just a bit late, due to crazy rain that delayed work a couple of days in June). And they finally put up a sign to say what they’re building on the corner. It’s going to be a branch of one of the local banks. I’m sooooo relieved. It’s one of those corners where the traffic is already bad, and I was worried it was going to be something high traffic like a Starbucks, or even worse, a Dunkin Donuts. I’m still worried that having cars turning and entering and exiting what used to be a wooded lot is going to FUBAR the traffic at that intersection even more, but a bank is about the best I could have hope for.

Yesterday I started The Big Flare Project Merge at work, and it was so easy! Seriously, I’ve worked with Flare so long that I know which files need to be manually merged and which things I can just drop into the folder in Windows Explorer. A little bit of search and replace was required too, but overall, pretty painless to get all my Word and RoboHelp files to live together in a single project. And then I got started doing the thing I’ve been waiting months to do - the merge down revisions! I combined and rewrote all the user management topics yesterday. (And found some seriously outdated stuff, like those tabs? No longer exist.) Today I will start on reports. *GLEE* I’ve been wanting to consolidate this project for a year now, and it’s finally happening! Expect gleeful stats about how many duplicate files I've been able to delete in the coming weeks.

Last night, right before I went to bed, the damn fire alarm started chirping. It wasn’t low battery, because the damn thing is wired into the house. So it was either dust or a spider had gotten inside the thing and was walking around on the sensors. I remembered that somewhere I had some canned air that I bought to clean my computer keyboard. I managed to find it, hiding in my desk, and climbed up on the stepstool to give the fire alarm a good dusting. No more chirping, and I slept like a baby. GO ME!

I’ve been waiting for Outlander to premiere on Starz for months now. (I’ve been a fan of the books since the late 90s). Someone posted the link to the first episode over on Facebook this week (I guess Starz wants to give you a free sample so you have time to call your cable company and subscribe, but I took a deal to get HBO for stupid cheap a while back, so I already have Starz). I watched it last night, and it’s everything I could have asked for. The actress they cast to play Claire is perfect, you know it the minute you see her. And Jamie? Well, my only complaint is that I’ve dated a redhead, and while this actor is hot (and authentic Scots, accent and all), he is not a redhead. In the books, at one point he’s on the run and because his hair is so red he has to wear a bonnet to hide it because you can see it’s him from miles away (hence his nickname at the time as The Dunbonnet). They’ve dyed his hair red, but it’s not nearly bright enough to require a bonnet to disguise it. But I quibble. I’m already weak in the knees over his cheekbones and accent and knees. Proper red hair might have killed me. (Warning, I will probably be crushing over Sam Heughan quite a bit over the next six weeks…)

Also, why men should watch Outlander too.

Linkies
Prince William to hold civilian job. I wish him luck with that, and very much hope that the British tabloids allow him to do his job without harassment, which could cost people’s lives. I will always insist that Diana’s legacy is that she raised a couple of good kids.

Project 562 photographs what Native Americans actually look like today.

Code talker Chester Nez and the tragic history of native language

The Pope's 10 tips for happiness. Number 9 kinda blows my mind.

#2 Amanda has decided that shaving is not her thing. Have I shared this one before? I know I've seen this on Tumblr before. I love this woman's art.

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend on tap!
