Meet the Parents?

May 08, 2006 08:35

Sorry for the lack of posts, folks, had a VERY busy weekend. Thankfully, hanging out with Browncoats on Saturday in Long Beach AND on Sunday in Venice limited my exposure to the in-laws, but I do have some stories:

Friday: I get home to find the in-laws watching TV. Leticia is out promoting gig with her bandmates -- which is the next night -- so eventually her parents leave to walk to Vons and so some shopping. About 1/2 hour later, Leticia returns wondering where the parents are. After she takes a nap, we go to Karaoke with her mom, which is okay. Her mom seemed to have a good time, and we actually had some laughs, so that wasn't so bad at all really.

Saturday: After I get back from Long Beach, I'm wiped out, and Leticia is hanging with her folks in our apartment. She's busy getting ready for her gig, though, so I don't have much to do. Her mom busies herself by helping Leticia look nice for her gig, while her dad watches TV, nearly immobile in his chair. Eventually the time comes where we leave. Since we decide to take separate cars, Leticia's mom goes with her while her dad goes with me. I had to stop by a drug store to get video tapes for the video camera, so Leticia's dad waits in the car (which I don't mind at all, really).

As we're driving to the bar where Leticia's gig will be held, I notice Leticia's dad playing with my vents. Changing the directions, turning the fan up and down, changing the temperature. This is when it dawns on me. If I'm correct, Leticia's dad isn't comfortable unless he can control SOMETHING around him, no matter how small it is. He has to control SOMETHING. This explains a lot of his behavior, to be honest, so I feel like I come to more of an understanding of the man. On the way to the gig, I get a couple of phone calls (though I don't encourage talking on the phone while driving). After I'm done, he goes into a story about WWII that's actually kind of funny. I wonder if we've bonded a little bit.

Leticia's gig goes well. Even though the place is a total dive, the sound is awesome and her band sounds great. Leticia's parents stay for both sets, which surprises the heck out of me. Eventually I drive them home...where immediately they want to watch the video of the gig I just made. I find this odd, since we just witnessed the show, but I put the tape in and let them watch it. Eventually Leticia comes homes soon after us and watches it with them. They're still watching it when I fall asleep.
