Spring break is finally here. For the second year in a row I am spending it with friends on campus. I haven't really begun to relax yet because I've been dancing up a storm since school ended. On Saturday I went to audition for an up and coming company in New York. They're super hot right now and their work is pretty incredible. I'll describe it as incredibly sexy dancers doing the most incredibly physical stuff on stage. Their emotional range teeters between "I'm going to fucking kill you" to "Fuck me now" to "I'm an obsessive compulsive ballerina". Essentially it's like dance on steroids...or acid. I love it. I got a call back too and although I can't do the project I had an awesome time stretching my artistic boundaries. I think they like me too! Always fun.
The other dance related project that I've taken on is helping my friend Phina apply for a grant. She needed me to dance a part in a piece that we learned two years ago and I agreed to do it. We have had a few last minute rehearsals and one extremely physical coaching session in the city. I actually danced in front of Merce Cunningham for the second time in my life yesterday. He and his assistant, Robert Swinston, helped me and Phina out with cleaning the duet up. It was pretty much the most nerve racking experience ever, especially because a bunch of the company members were standing on the side watching us do it. I think it went relatively well.
It seems as though I only ever post about my dance life, no? Maybe it's the only thing I think is worth hearing about. True to form, my last point is dance related too. My comp teacher Kazuko Hirabayashi, a notorious stickler for old-school composition methods and a perpetual naysayer, recently saw an unfinished version of my junior choreography project and was super complimentary of it. I have never had very much interest in choreographing and consequently have never been very confident in my compositional skills so her approval was really nice. The piece was pretty rough, and is still unfinished but in an unprecedented move she asked me if I'd like to bring my piece to Spain to be shown in a competition. There's no money for me to go to Spain with it, but I get to cast my piece and set it on a new cast who will perform it there and potentially win a cash prize. (I think....her English is pretty bad so I never really know what I'm signing on for.) Pretty cool though, right? Now I just have to fill the huge gap in the middle and make sure the new stuff doesn't suck....easier said than done.
Connor also gets back today. He has been in Portland for the week auditioning for summer work with one of his favourite dance companies. He got the job! I'm always so proud of his accomplishments. Considering he's been dancing for such a short time it's incredible how talented he is. Yet, the eternally competitor in me is also the tiniest bit jealous and nervous that one day he will surpass me in the dance world. I know, childish and irrational, but still, it's there. I'm just happy to have four days off with nothing to do but sleep, eat, and do what pleases me. The cherry on top of my spring break cake is that I just booked a one hour massage for Friday afternoon. Dominic is a miracle worker and I expect to feel like a dream come Saturday morning.
What's coming up? Spring concert. I'm in two pieces this year and neither has really begun yet so it's going to be a crazy psycho month of rehearsals up until the show. I'm also heading down to Brooklyn at some point to start with Mark again. Dance, dance, dance. I really can't seem to write about anything else. How sad and one dimensional of me.
