So I joined a gym yesterday. These things don't tend to work out very well for me, but I figured it was time to give it another shot.
How it all came about was kind of funny. A coworker and I were leaving work and she told me she was going to the gym and then coming back up to work. I know her gym is in her/our neighborhood (we share cabs home a lot) and it turns out she belongs to three gyms and one of them is a super-seekret gym in the basement of our building! I've been in this office for two years and never knew it existed.
And it really is super-seekret. You go down to the lower lobby, then take the elevator to the first parking level, then go through an unmarked door and down some stairs, then through another heavy door down an industrial looking corridor, then buzz yourself through another steel down and another corridor, turn a corner, and there it is.
It turns out what it actually is is the National Personal Training Institute or some such, so not really a public gym at all, but they offer limited memberships to people in the building. Very limited, and I think this is why I never heard about it but - the times being what they are - it looks like with everybody having layoffs all over the place they've had space open up for new members. It's nothing fancy, but you can get student personal training/massage/etc and they have a handful of classes and such that are also part of the training program for their students. And, again not really being a public gym, it's $30 a month and no contract.
So, we'll see how this goes. I've been doing WW again and am just amazed at how much better I'm eating, and I'm saving well more than that each month on not spending seven or eight bucks for lunch every day, so even if I don't go as much as I ought it'll be worth it. I'd like to get in the habit of going at least once a week - well, more would be better of course, but I want to start realistically. They told me they're doing a "biggest loser" style challenge this spring, not centered around weight loss but with pledging to spend so many hours or minutes at the gym over the month or week or whatever, so that might be a help too, to add that little element of pressure. We'll see. But I really want to work hard at getting my life back in order and getting in shape and, especially, doing normal people things like going to the gym instead of always retreating to my cave are a part of it.
Now to find my workout clothes, which haven't seen the light of day in a few years. Wish me luck!
