BANDWAGON JUMP: It's Fuwa Fuwa time!!!

Nov 23, 2010 22:48

Leave a comment saying, "IT'S FUWA FUWA TIME!" and I will give you five words I associate with you. Then post about what they mean to you, along with this, at your journal.

I got tagged by two people (all of my LJ pals jumped on this bandwagon at the same time), so I'm replying to both of them in one post. ^_^

Velma, Slayers, Jem, humour, and big sister.

1. Velma: Before she was character assassinated in the latest Scooby incarnation, Velma was a great fictional role model for young girls because of how confident and intelligent she was. I fell in love with her when I watched A Pup Named Scooby Doo as a child (mainly because she was the cutest character) and, as and adult, I grew to appreciate how unique she was (especially for a female character created in 1969). One of my favorite things about her is her design (despite dozens of reboots over the past 40 years, her look has remained fairly consistent). Most 2-D "nerdy girl" characters are drawn to look like either she-beasts or cheerleaders with glasses; but Velma actually looks like a realistically cute nerd. And her face and body type set her apart from all the female clones that came out of Hanna-Barbera at the same time she did (FUN FACT: her official Hanna-Barbera bio lists her as being 4'9'' tall and 95 pounds). Her unique look also makes her ridiculously fun to draw!

Sadly, part of her appeal as of late stems from her current "underdog" status. It seems as if Warner Bros. has something against poor little Velma. Every time she gets a canon love interest, he's either evil and/or crazy. And when she finally hooked up with sweet, mellow Shaggy (after 40 freakin' years of fans shipping them), the Mystery Incorporated writers decided to turn Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby Doo into loony assholes in order to manfacture emotional ~*drama*~. AARG! I hope the next Scooby reboot is kinder to her.

2. Slayers: This show may look like a cliche fantasy anime on the surface (and in many ways, it is); but the characters are what really sets it apart from the thousands of other "sword and sorcery" shows floating around. They're really fun and have fantastic interactions. And it's fun to look at all the different Slayers mediums (anime, novel, manga, etc.) and compare all the little differences between them.
The bustling fan community full of awesome people (including my two taggers ^_^) has helped keep my interest in the series alive. And I'll always have fond memories of seeing the Peacemen episode for the first time in high school and giggling at the novelty of hearing the Pokemon actors in a sentai parody.

3. Jem: This show is a total guilty pleasure for me! It's one of the most ridiculously melodramatic soap operas EVER made! And the romance between the male and female leads is one of the most hypnotically f#&ked up romances in kiddie cartoon history (well, it was before the disturbing Scooby/Shaggy/Velma triangle was introduced in Mystery Incorporated >_<)!
And, being a fan of campy 80s songs, I just adore the music in this show! The only show that has managed to come close to successfully using Jem's music video formula is Nerima Daikon Bros. But, unfortunately, NDB loses some points for reusing the same 4 or 5 melodies over and over.

4. Humour: Hmmm. I'm not really sure how to describe what humor means to me. I guess I could say that it helps me unwind and relax when life sucks. If you want an idea about how my sense of humor works, the two shows I ALWAYS turn to when I need a good chuckle are King of the Hill and Mission Hill (no relation). Those shows never fail to make me laugh out loud despite the fact that I practically have them both memorized!

5. Big sister: I take pride in being a big sister despite the fact that my little sisters don't need me to physically protect them (they're both bigger and stronger than me) and they rarely ask my advice on things like clothes and boys because I'm terminally uncool. But every once in a while they need advice on practical matters that squares like me excel at (like finance), and that makes it all worth while. ^_^
Also, my first sister is part of the reason I'm such a huge nerd today. We didn't get along for the first 13-14 years of our lives (despite being so close in age that we're practically twins); but that changed overnight when we discovered that we were both huge anime and DCAU fangirls! After that, we made up for lost time by bonding at small comic conventions and saving our money until we could afford a trip to nerd Mecca (aka San Diego Comic Con).

scooby doo, books, lina inverse, comics, red

1. Scooby Doo:
The new Mystery Incorporated cartoon jump started my dormant Scooby fandom (too bad that show has turned to sh*t as of late and character assassinated poor Velma, Scooby, and Shaggy. **grumblegrumble**). But Scooby Doo has always been one of my guilty pleasures. Yeah, some of the incarnations suck (mainly the Scrappy stuff); but a lot of them are REALLY good. Mainly the string of animated movies from the late 90s and the recent Camp Scare feature.
A Pup Named Scooby Doo holds up surprisingly well and, in my opinion, it's the best Scooby Doo show ever made. The fact that it shamelessly jumped on the "popular characters as kids" bandwagon doesn't matter to me. It's a fantastic, loving, genuinely funny parody and Kid-Velma is one of the cutest things ever animated (she walks like Marvin the Martian, how can you not love that?).

--Shameless Plug time--
My affection for this franchise has gotten so out of control lately that I took the Mod reins at the scooby_doo  LJ comm! Check it out! ^_^

2. Books (I'm assuming you mean books without pictures ^_~):
Over the past few years, I've read mostly non-fiction books like biographies whatnot (the last fiction book I read was the final Harry Potter). My current favorite book is Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. It's a truly inspiring book by an incredible woman who has accomplished more in 40 years than most people do in 10 lifetimes. In my opinion, her book should be required reading for anyone who wants to pontificate about radical Islam and how western countries should deal with it. I also own her audiobooks because it's an amazing experience to hear her relate her life story in her own words (it helps that she has a hauntingly beautiful voice/accent). I'd go on but, this video showcases her awesomeness far better than I could:

And, please don't de-friend me for this, I like Ann Coulter's stuff, too. Yeah, she comes across as abrasive on TV, but her books are very well-written and she has a razor sharp wit (and that wit helped get me through living alone in hostile territory back in my old Denver dorm). Her older columns from before she became a full time political pundit (the ones where she wrote about things like the dating scene in Washington DC) are actually quite insightful and cute. And she's absolutely hilarious whenever she appears on Red Eye With Greg Gutfeld. I wish more people would actually read some of her work in context before hating on her.

3. Lina Inverse: I like that she's a tough character who keeps a positive attitude and never wallows in angst even when she has every right to. She's just fun to watch. And, I admit, I like that she gets a hot, buff, loyal he-man to follow her like a handsome puppy dog without even trying (you go girl!). And Lina Inverse introduced me to the awesome adorableness that is Lisa Ortiz.
My only qualm with the character is that I could do without the "Lina has tiny boobs LOL" jokes; but, thankfully, those are few and far between in the series proper.

4. Comics: Most of the comics I follow are based off cartoon shows (like the Darkwing and Uncle Scrooge series). The only one I read that was never a TV show is Terry Moore's Echo (which rocks, btw). As much as I love Batman, Superman, and their pals; I'm not a fan of the labrynthian continuity you have to keep up with just to understand who's who in the average Marvel or DC Superhero book.

Hands down, my favorite comic book is The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck ( anyone who knows me already knows why). It's one of the greatest pieces of art/literature that has ever been created and should be thrown in the face of every pretentious idiot who still thinks that comic books are just for little kids and sexually maladjusted fanboys.

5. Red: Uh, it's a pretty color I guess (though my favorite color is actually blue). ^_^;
