Beloved by Toni Morrison
This novel won the Pulitzer Prize back in 1987 and is written as a post-modern slave narrative. It is loosely based on historical murder case in which Margret Garner, an escaped slave, attempted to kill her children rather than have them recaptured and returned to slavery in the south. Beloved is a haunting (no pun intended for those of you who have read it) and tragic novel. Morrison deals with slavery and infanticide with a brutal rawness and compassion for its victims.
