Sweaty, sticky, sweet, that was just this morning. It's a wonder people love the hot weather so much. Peeling off the clothes on your back is the best feeling after a day of walking around the city and taking in not only the parks and people but also the sweltering heat and exhaust from traffic. I stick it out, get my daily specialty beverage at the local organic market and make my way to Washington Square or the museum of Natural History, which I happened to find myself in yesterday.
I went there with an old friend of mine who's really into the evolutionary part of history. We used to visit a lot when we were in college. Usually, if you take a course such as introduction into human evolution, chances are you'll need to make your way to the MoNH at least once in your lifetime. It's a good experience and a perfect way to control your fears, which was what we went there for last time. She had a fear of whales that was completely from left field, she never lived near the water or even encountered a whale before so it was hard to understand. She did recognize that it was somewhat strange to have a fear that she didn't quite understand why, but she refused to let it prevent her from walking into the MoNH. And she did just that, she walked right up to the huge sea creatures display, stared up at the giant whale fixture suspended from the ceiling and stood still for about twenty minutes. I was used to her freak out and actually thought this giant air whale would do her in, that the fear and stress finally got to her. Then she surprised me by calmly walking away and asking me if we could go get something to eat. She looked differently, fearless and satisfied, as if she had just conquered the horrible sea creature gnawing at her ankles. Eventually she'd read Moby Dick and watch Finding Nemo.
Yesterday, we celebrated her victory by walking right back up to that whale and telling it we were going out to lunch.
I love being back in New York.
