FILL "The Worst Laid Plans"

“No, son. Not a chance. Not even a little one.”
“But-“
“NO, Jared. Your father and I have discussed this. We do not approve.”
“What? Why not?”
At this point, Jared was ready to pull his hair out, his throat tightening. His parents were looking at each other, not at him, and it infuriated him.
“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?” he demanded.
“Jensen’s not right for you,” said his mother, at almost exactly the same time his father said “It’s a bad career move.”
They paused, then looked at each other nervously and repeated their reasoning. Except they’d switched reasons.
Jared glanced from one to the other, back and forth, watching them redden with embarrassment.
“What’s going on?”
“You have our reason,” his mother said curtly.
“I have two reasons! And I know you like Jen, so one of ‘em’s bullshit.”
The room was silent as the grave, just for a second; several loud people were approaching the front door.
“Oh lord, not now,” said Jared and his father simultaneously.
Jared’s sister Megan threw open the door laughing as the twenty balloons she was carrying bobbled around her and her friend.
“He’ll hate it, I promise you that. NO ONE does a surprise wedding. Surprise proposal maybe, but not a surprise wedding.”
“I’ll take that chance,” said a much deeper voice behind the girls.
Jensen.
“Out the back door, now!" hissed his mother. You are not going to ruin my future son-in-law’s surprise!”
