Re: Prompt: SPN Sam/Dean (part 2/2)verucasalt123June 25 2011, 21:53:45 UTC
A week later they were standing in a small room in the town’s courthouse, a judge looking over their paperwork, a couple of courthouse employees standing by to be witnesses. All of a sudden, everything around them stopped, like someone had hit a mystical pause button, and both men stood in shock as they saw their mother standing there, her presence ethereal and fascinating. Mary looked just as Dean’s fuzzy memory remembered her, and just like the pictures Sam had seen since he had no memory of her at all. The silence was broken when she began to speak.
“I’ve only got a minute or two, so let’s not waste any of it on stunned silence, okay? I’m only here because there was something I had to say and I begged for just a moment with my boys. I want you to know that I’m happy for you, and your father is too. There’s no beyond-the grave judgment. I know this isn’t conventional, but knowing how happy you make each other is all that matters. Whether it makes a difference to you or not, you have my blessing. Please be good to each other”, she said, as her appearance started to waver. “I have to go back now, my darlings, I’m sorry I can’t stay. I love you.”, her last words fading away with her visage.
Both men had tears in their eyes, regretting that the moment was over so quickly that neither of them had had time to speak back to their mother. They held each other’s hands even more tightly, overcome with the emotion of seeing Mary’s face and hearing her words.
But then time started right back up, as if not even a second had passed, and the judge deemed their credentials to be genuine. She started the simple ceremony in the tiny space of her chambers, and allowed to two men in front of her to exchange the traditional vows, promising to love and cherish, in sickness and in health (Dean spared a moment to take in his bum knee that had gotten them here to start with) forsaking all others, as neither of them had what it took to write their own, not on such short notice, anyway.
Heavy titanium bands decorated with the sigils of the archangels etched into them and each of their names inscribed on the inside were exchanged, and the judge matter-of-factly stated that the law now recognized them as a married couple. The appearance and acceptance of their mother’s rested spirit added to the emotion they already felt, and Dean couldn’t stop himself from leaning in for a passionate kiss. It lasted as long as it could, until the judge cleared her throat, and they backed off, both of them grinning like love-struck teenagers instead of grown men well into their thirties (Dean getting closer to forty now and Sam never missing an opportunity to point it out).
With the official document carelessly shoved into one of Sam’s many pockets, they walked out of the courthouse with their fingers intertwined and both almost fell down the steps because they were so busy looking at the rings on their fingers and still awed by Mary’s swift but reassuring visit.
So there they were, Mr. and Mr. Sam and Dean Remington, as Sam had chosen to give up his falsified last name and take Dean’s instead, They’d had the same last name their whole lives, the same last name of their the brief visitor, the one that had belonged to Mary and John, and sure it was wasn’t Winchester anymore, which was regrettable at the least, but they could get past it. Their mom had come to them and that brief but stunning experience chased away any doubts they may have had.
There’s more this story, 40-plus years of more, but nothing could ever glow like the look on Mary’s ghostly face looking in on them at that moment.
