They met one another's gaze like two rivalling captains, arguing over their rights to the same ship. She evaluated him, with demanding, harsh eyes, and he challenged her, with courage and a little bit of anger.
Then she slapped him.
And next, she hugged him.
"Oh, Will," she whispered as she squeezed the stunned man. "How could you deprive me of the pleasure of knowing that my son finally found someone?"
Riker's eyes widened and his mouth opened. Wait, what? He lifted his hands, uncertain if he should hug her back or what, it all felt very awkward.
"Uh..."
She pushed him back and she was smiling. Riker couldn't believe it. Her eyes welled up with tears, she drew in a deep breath ― and then she slapped him again.
"And how could you just drop it on me like that, you're getting married?" she snapped.
Riker made a face and touched his cheek. "Would you stop hitting me?"
"No!" she declared. "Married! He's, he's what, he's..."
"Old enough," Riker said firmly. "He's old enough, and we're going to do it, whether you approve or not!"
Beverly raised her brows. "What? Wait... you think I'm against this?"
Now Riker was getting confused. "Well... uh. Aren't you?"
"Oh my... no!"
The Captain stared at her, frustrated. "Then... then what is all this fuss about?" he exploded.
She flailed. "You didn't tell me! Neither of you!"
Riker let out a kind of sigh, frustration and relief all at once, like a giant "oo-oohhh..." as he understood. She was beginning to look a little less upset when she saw that he was catching on. Not forgiving, though.
"Um." Riker scratched his neck. "I guess... we were worried about how you were going to take it."
Beverly shook her head. "What kind of a mother do you think I am?" she asked him pointedly.
Riker looked sheepish. "I'm sorry?" he offered.
She harrumphed. "Well, call Wesley back in," she said grumpily. "We'll need to celebrate." She turned toward the table. "But don't think I'm through with you yet!"
Riker was trying to decide whether he was happy or nervous as he went to the door to fetch Wesley. He was still imagining all those injections she knew. Perhaps there was something worse than death, and she would exact her vengeance in the form of a nasty rash, or...
Wesley's worried eyes met him as the door slid open and the young man stepped in and close to Riker, his eyes going over the man like he was worried that he was injured somehow. "What happened?" he whispered.
"She's mad at us for not telling her sooner," he whispered back.
"Boys," Beverly called from the table, "get over here! I want to raise a toast for your engagement!"
Wesley looked at Riker. "You told her?" He actually sounded annoyed about it. "I wanted to tell her myself!"
"Boys!" Beverly sounded impatient. "Come on! We need to toast and start planning for your wedding!"
Riker glanced toward the woman. "Wedding."
"Of course!" She was smiling now. "There's so much to plan! I'll ask Captain Picard to perform the ceremonies, and of course you two will need to find ringbearers. Oh! And the rings! Wesley, come here, I need to check if your father's ring would fit you."

After that, Riker could only watch as a pair of Crushers went on about the wedding and it all started feeling a little more real. Not half as real, though, as Wesley's nimble fingers twining in between his own after his mother had left. The younger man pressed their bodies together and rested his head against Riker's shoulder as they sat on the couch in Wesley's quarters.
"Will?" Wesley whispered.
"Yeah?"
"You really want this, right?"
Riker thought about the overbearing, over-protective Beverly and about the grand wedding plans and the rings and the guests and the hassle. And then he thought about the brilliant, grown-up Wesley and about living together and about the smile. Just as Wesley's head snapped up in concern that he was taking so long, the Captain turned to look at the younger man. It was all worth it.
Without saying a word, Riker leaned in to touch Wesley's lips with his own. He kissed, and he kissed, and he kissed, his arms closing round Wesley, pushing the younger man down on his back on the couch until he had Wesley pinned down under him. Riker removed his lips for only long enough to breathe out two words, the same ones he planned to repeat a few weeks from now.
"I do."
Okay so I was wrong, it took 5 comments and not 4. Damn LJ.

First of all- OMG SOMEBODY FILLED MY WESLEY/RIKER PROMPT!!!!! Some days I feel like I'm the only one who likes them.
So this was perfect! It was exactly what I was hoping for. I swear I don't know how these two always manage to be so damn adorable, but guh.
I can't thank you enough for this wonderful fill. You have no idea how hard it is for me to just not burst out giggling here at work. I'm squeeing so hard in my head right now though.
wondering whether an escape pod would make it to the nearest planet in one piece, and whether Beverly would actually follow him all the way down to kill him once she heard the news. *snort* I love that line!
And this "Yes," Riker said, "Wesley makes excellent pancakes. He's made them for me for breakfast many times, and they're always delicious." made me *headdesk* Silly Will.

Okay you know I have to confess that I've never written about this pairing before. But your prompt just... kind of exploded in my head. So thank you for the prompt!! I haven't written mush in ages, this felt good. And now I really adore this couple. They just... WORK, somehow.

Yes, new pairings are a delight! This one was particularly enjoyable and made me find new levels in the characters. I never realised that I apparently think Wesley is gay. O.o This amuses me.

They do flow easily, that's for sure. I think I have to agree with you there. Even though I sometimes make him bi, I really see him as gay. So, you have a new fan for life! I totally just went and squeed on your lj, and you should definitely post this to the comm!

I am so in love with this. ♥ I've always been taken with Wesley and Riker but this is the first fic I've read of them and I'M SO GLAD I DID. Honestly, you couldn't have handled this more perfectly. :) Beautiful.
