The next day was a Tuesday and neither girl could concentrate at school. Both girls stared longingly across the classroom at each other when the other wasn’t looking. Rachel felt absolutely depressed, and Quinn felt horrible because she knew she was responsible for the other girl’s pain. They avoided each other in the hallways and at lunch.

“Where’s Rachel?” Brittany asked Quinn, completely unaware of anything that had transpired between the two girls. Santana kicked her under the table in an attempt to get her to drop the subject. “Santana! Why did you kick me? I just wanted to know where she is!”

“Not. Now.” Santana whispered furiously but the other girl remained clueless. Quinn just stared glumly down at her lunch tray, poking an unidentified meat product with her fork. Santana sighed as she watched her friend sulk, and knew that she wasn’t going to get any answers from her any time soon.

That afternoon before Glee, Santana and Brittany were staked out in the Cheerio’s locker room. In reality, Brittany was bouncing on an exercise ball and Santana was peaking out the door. When Santana heard the sound of footsteps coming down the hallway and saw the unmistakable penny loafers of one Rachel Berry she smiled to herself.

“Perfect timing” she said to no one in particular.

Rachel was headed to Glee early, like usual, to fit in her vocal warm ups. Despite everything that had happened the night before, she still believed it was best to continue with her routine. As she was passing the Cheerio’s locker room, she felt a tug on her arm and was instantly flying through the now open door, and crashing into the tanned body of Santana Lopez. Santana pulled her down to straddle the bench.

“Sit.” she commanded, sitting down in front of her. “Talk.”

“What? Santana what is going on? I’m going to be late for my warm up!” She cried, trying to get up. She was stopped by Santana’s strong hands on her shoulders pushing her back onto the bench. Before Santana could speak they were interrupted by Brittany giggling.

“Look, San! I’m a seal!” She laughed. Both brunettes looked over to see Brittany now attempting to balance the huge ball on her nose. Santana sighed and turned her attention back to Rachel who was smiling softly at the blonde.

“Tell me what happened with you and Quinn.” she demanded, though softer now than before.

“We kissed” Rachel stated shakily, her eyes starting to water “and I told her I loved her. And then she said she can’t be with me, and it hurts so much, Santana!” She felt warm arms wrap around her from behind and blonde hair fall on her shoulder, and looked to see Brittany.

“You can cry you know. We don’t mind.” Brittany whispered sweetly, and the invitation was all Rachel needed, immediately fat tears were rolling down her face. She looked back to Santana who had a look of sympathy on her face.

“She said with the baby and Puck and Finn and everything she can’t do it. And I understand that, but her mum! Did she tell you?” Santana shook her head. “Her mother wants her to move back in with her! Her parents got divorced and her mother wants her back and I’m so scared she’s going to leave me!” Rachel cried.

“Did she say she was moving back?” Santana asked.

“No, but she didn’t say she was staying.”

“Maybe she’s waiting for you to ask her to stay. You need to let her know you don’t want her to move out okay?”

Rachel nodded at the other girl then pulled her in. For the second time in her life, Santana found herself hugging Rachel Berry.

--

That night the girls were avoiding each other, each in their own room. Rachel paced back and forth thinking about what Santana had told her. She made her way down the hall to Quinn’s room and burst in. And just like her usual self, she was blunt about what she wanted.

“I don’t want you to move out. I want you to stay.” She said, staring at Quinn who was in complete shock. Quinn could only nod her head and let out a quiet reply.

“If you still want me here, then okay.” She said in a strangled whisper. Rachel nodded and swiftly left the room.

For the next three weeks the girls still avoided each other. When necessary they acknowledged each other, but both found it too painful to be around each other. Santana had given up in attempts to get the two to start talking again, and now just opted to not be around either of them. Regionals came, and they had lost. Quinn gave birth to her baby, and despite the lack of interaction the girls had had for the past three weeks, there wasn’t a doubt in either girl’s mind that Rachel would be in the delivery room alongside Quinn. When Quinn was released from the hospital Rachel nervously entered the girl’s bedroom for the first time since she had asked her to stay. She sat at the end of the girl’s bed and Quinn sat up to face her.

“I’ve missed you.” Quinn whispered.

“I missed you too” Rachel replied matching the sadness of Quinn’s tone. She slowly reached out her hand which the blonde girl took. “I’m sorry I haven’t been talking to you very much. I was just...trying to deal.”

“It’s fine. I haven’t exactly made it easy for you.” Quinn threaded her fingers through Rachel’s and pulled her closer. “I miss how we used to be. You’re first and foremost my best friend. I don’t want to lose that because we both want it to be more than that.”

“I think we were always more,” Rachel whispered, locking her warm brown eyes onto Quinn’s hazel ones “we just didn’t know it.” The girl’s eyes remained locked on each other’s until Rachel lent forward and brushed her lips against Quinn’s. “It was always meant to be us.” She murmured.

“I love you.” Quinn whispered, and pulled away. “But I’m still not ready.”

“I know. I’m sorry for kissing you, it was incredibly selfish of me.”

“Don’t be, it wasn’t. I wanted it.” She took a deep breath. “I want us. I want all of it. But I want our friendship back first.”

“Okay. Friends first.” Rachel stated, with a smile.

--

It started out slow. They made sure they spent time together, and tried as best as they could to get back to how they were. Every few nights they wound up in each other’s room, desperate for the company. They had mutually agreed that the best night’s sleep was had when they were together, and Rachel was determined to have Quinn recover properly from the pregnancy. Eventually, they had almost got back to how they were before, except now they knew what was lingering between them, that the soft touches and the longing smiles were heavily weighted with feelings. It was this that kept them from fully returning to their former state. Eventually (not without a push from Santana) Quinn decided she needed to ask Rachel out. It wasn’t enough for her to just tell her she was ready to commit to her, she felt as though she needed to woo her.

They were lying on the couch one afternoon watching The Sound of Music with Quinn was holding Rachel from behind. She softly ran her fingers up and down the girls arm, loving the feeling of the soft skin beneath her fingertips. She also loved the smile Rachel got whenever she did this.

“Rach.” Quinn whispered, but the other girl was so engrossed in the movie that she failed to respond. “Rachel.” Quinn said louder. She smiled in satisfaction when the girls eyes flickered backwards.

“Yes?” Rachel replied, her concentration back on the movie. Quinn sighed.

“I really need you to pay attention for this.” Quinn said quietly, pressing a kiss to the back of the girl’s neck. This got her attention. The tiny girl rolled over to face the blonde. Suddenly Quinn was nervous, and she caught her bottom lip between her teeth.

“What is it, Quinnie?” Rachel asked sweetly. Her warm smile was contagious, and enough to give Quinn confidence.

“I was just wondering...” she paused, drawing it out. Rachel always loved when things were more dramatic than necessary. “If maybe, if you were interested of course...”

“Yes?” Rachel asked curiously, desperate to know what the other girl was going to say.

“If, perhaps...” Now the blonde was just teasing, still running her fingers down the girls arm.

“QUINN!”

“Wouldyouliketogoonadatewithme?” she rushed out. Rachel cocked her head to the side, a huge grin on her face. Quinn was certain if it had been anyone else, they’d have asked her to repeat herself. But not Rachel. Rachel understood her.

“I would love to.” She answered simply. “But right now I have a movie to watch. And it’s not just any movie, Quinn, it’s a musical.” She rolled back over, but made sure to snuggle back into the girl as close as possible.

The two couldn’t wipe the grins off their faces for the rest of the week.

--

The date couldn’t come any sooner, and when it was over, there was another. And another, and another, until the girls decided ‘screw it’ and made themselve’s official (which earned a loud ‘FINALLY!” form Santana and lots of cheers and hugs from Brittany).

It was two months after their initial date, when they had the house to themselves. Quinn had known this weekend was coming for a long time, and had planned a romantic evening for Rachel. The date went well, until they got back to the house. They were on Quinn’s bed, lips locked, shirts off and hands almost under bras. Almost, because when Quinn slid her fingers under the red lacy fabric clinging to Rachel’s body, the other girl pulled back. Quinn suppressed a frustrated groan.

“We should watch a movie or something.” Rachel said, but it was obvious by her expression it was this opposite of what she wanted to do. Quinn shook her head.

“No, this is fine” she said, pushing her girlfriend down onto the bed, planting her lips on the girl’s neck. She knew what she was trying to do. It wasn’t that the other girl didn’t want to go further, because she had told Quinn on more than one occasion that she was ready, and willing, to lose her virginity to the blonde. However, Rachel always seemed to stop them because she believed Quinn wasn’t ready and hadn’t fully recovered from giving birth. Quinn knew that there were issues with her beliefs and values that Rachel might see as a barrier, but the fact that Rachel was trying to be respectful about it all just made Quinn want her more.

Once more Quinn tried to slip her fingers under the fabric, and this time Rachel didn’t stop her. Her muscles did tense up though, so Quinn took it slow. She started by pulling the straps off the girls shoulders. She kissed her way down to the valley between the girls breasts, earning a satisfied moan from the brunette. When she eventually did get the girls bra off, Rachel pulled away again. This time, Quinn didn’t hold back on the frustrated growl.

“Quinn, this is getting pretty serious. Are you sure you’re okay with this?” Rachel asked concerned, and Quinn couldn’t help it when the feeling of frustration disappeared.

“I’m fine. Are you okay?”

“Yes. I just thought...you know, that you’d want to wait longer.”

“I love you Rachel. What more is there to wait for?” she asked, staring lovingly down at the girl below her. “I want you, and only you. I’m sure, Rachel. I am yours. That is, if you’ll let me?”

“I want you to be mine. And I want to be yours.” Rachel whispered, stroking the girl’s face.

“I am yours.” Quinn repeated, brushing her lips against Rachel’s. “Forever.”

“Forever.” Rachel repeated. With that, the two girls lost themselves to each other’s touch, delicate fingers caressing skin, exploring new places they’d memorise for eternity, the promise of forever embedded permanently on their lips.
