As Regionals grew closer, Rachel’s realization of her feelings for Quinn grew more prominent in everything she did. Suddenly, everyday actions like Quinn holding her hand during a movie, or pulling her hand to her stomach to feel the baby kicking felt like the biggest thing in the world. She was more aware of the way each of these actions made her feel, and couldn’t help but wonder if she’d ever have more from Quinn. Sometimes it was hard for her, like when they’d be having a movie night with Santana and Brittany, and she’d look from the other girls, arms wrapped tightly around each other, down to her and Quinn in an almost identical position. She knew Santana and Brittany weren’t just friends, no matter how much they pretended they were, and she wondered if Quinn ever realised the similarities between their relationships. She found herself more and more often telling Quinn that she loved her. Each time, the implications behind the words grew heavier and heavier.

Sometimes she thought Quinn knew, like on the nights they were cuddled together in bed and Quinn would cup her cheek and stare deeply into her eyes, and Rachel would whisper out an ‘I love you’, and Quinn would get this look on her face like she knew exactly what Rachel meant. Amongst the lingering looks, and the sheer intimacy of their relationship, Rachel hoped Quinn even felt the slightest bit the same about her.

She knew she’d have to tell Quinn eventually. It was just too much for her to handle, being so close to the girl for so much time in just one day, and not being able to do anything more than hold the girl close and wish they could be more. She wanted Quinn, she wanted all of her, and just like she had told Noah, she wanted her too much.

--

The first person to find out was Santana, though it was purely unintentional on Rachel’s part. The four girl’s had been studying for an upcoming Spanish test, and they were all lounged across Rachel’s large bed. Santana was lying on her back staring at the plain colour of the ceiling while the other three were hunched over their books, scribbling on worksheets that Rachel had prepared to ‘properly simulate the structure and flow of the quiz‘ that they’d be taking the next day. Santana let out a sigh at her pure boredom, catching the attention of the tiny brunette on the other side of the bed. Rachel looked up and realised the girls position.

“Santana. Why aren’t you completing your worksheet?!” she demanded. “How do you expect to be fully prepared for the test tomorrow if you do not take the necessary steps to prepare yourself?”

“Because, Berry,” she started, rolling her eyes “In case you haven’t realised, I speak Spanish fluently. I could do that test in my sleep.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Yes, why are you here?” Quinn asked with a slightly annoyed expression on her face. When Santana didn’t reply, Brittany spoke up, her attention still fixed on her work.

“She enjoys your company.” A satisfied smirk spread across Quinn’s face, earning a growl from Santana. She rolled over and watched as the others got back to work. That was when she first saw it. Rachel’s hand would pause at each new question. At first Santana though maybe she was just stuck and needed some help, but when she looked up at the girl to offer her services, she saw the girl staring at her blonde room mate, with a small smile on her face. The staring lasted around 30 seconds before Rachel shook her head and focused back on the worksheet, answering a top of three questions before her attention was back on Quinn. The third time it happened, Santana smirked and spoke up.

“Need a little help there, Rachel?” she asked innocently, but as Rachel’s attention snapped to her she caught the last seconds of the smirk. Her eyes went wide once she realised Santana had caught her staring.

“N-no. I’m quite fine thank you!” she replied, a blush spreading across her cheeks. She buried her head back down focusing on the worksheet, avoiding Santana’s knowing gaze. A few seconds of silence passed before Santana spoke again.

“Does anyone want something to drink?”

“Yeah”

“Sure” Came the replies from Quinn and Brittany.

“Rachel? Give me a hand?” she smiled mischievously at the look of dread on the other girls face. She rose from the bed and sauntered down the stairs, only just managing to hear Rachel’s faint footsteps behind her. She waited in the kitchen for Rachel to round the corner, and when she did she pulled the other girl in shutting the door behind her. Rachel whimpered and shut her eyes, knowing exactly what was about to happen.

“So. What’s going on with you and Fabray?” Santana demanded.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about” Rachel replied shakily. She knew it was a lost cause.

“Oh please, you’re not really going to try that.” She rolled her eyes. “You’ve been staring at her like a love sick puppy all afternoon.”

“I was merely admiring her hair style. My hair simply refuses to-”

“Bullshit” Santana said, calling her out. Moments passed while Santana stared at the shorter girl biting her lip nervously. “You like her, don’t you?”

There was silence again while Rachel contemplated opening up to Santana. They weren’t very close, but she really couldn’t talk to anyone else about this, and well, if Santana was willing to listen...

“Yes.” she stated finally, and a victorious smile covered Santana’s face.

“I knew it!” she half yelled, and Rachel had to quieten her down.

“You can’t tell a soul! If anyone were to find out, I’d die!” Rachel said dramatically.

“This is just too good..” Santana continued, ignoring the other girl.

“Santana!” Rachel pleaded.

“Look, I’m not going to tell anyone. Okay, that’s a lie, because I’m totally going to tell Britt. But other than that...your secrets safe.”

Rachel nodded her head, biting on her lip again. “Thank you” she said quietly.

“So what are you going to do?”

“I’m not going to do anything Santana.”

“I could help. To see if she’d go for it, you know. I mean, it might be a bit hard, since usually I just get the person drunk and get B to make out with them to see if they’re interested, but I’m thinking that might be an issue with the whole pregnancy thing. But I can definitely think of something else.”

“Thank you for the offer, but I think I’d rather handle this on my own.” Rachel replied, nodding. Santana sighed.

“Fine, whatever. But if you need help, I’m here. Well, I’ll probably ignore you and send you to Britt, but it’s the thought that counts right?”

“Thank you.” Rachel smiled, grabbing onto the taller girl and pulling her into a hug. Santana hesitantly hugged her back.

--

It was a week later, and there was only three weeks left until Regionals. Quinn had just told Rachel her final plans for the baby, and she was happy with her final decision to put the baby up for adoption.

“I’d love to keep her” Quinn whispered, her hand clamped in Rachel’s “But I can’t. I can’t give her the life she deserves. And I know I was meant for more than this, you know? I want to do something great with my life.”

Rachel pulled the girl against her, running her hands through blonde locks. She knew Quinn loved it when she did that. “You will, Quinn. You’re an amazing person. You can do anything you put your mind to” she whispered in her ear. “I believe in you.”

She pulled her head back slowly, cheeks grazing, temples pushed up against each other. Somehow over the loud pumping of her heart she heard Quinn’s breath hitch in her throat, and her eyes glance down to her lips. Their faces were in front of each other now, barely apart. Rachel made the first move. She tilted her head forward slowly, making her way to Quinn’s lips at a painfully slow pace. She wanted to give the other girl time to react, time to push her away if she was making a horrible mistake. However, Quinn didn’t pull away and Rachel’s lips met the soft flesh of the blonde’s in a feather light kiss. She pulled her lips back , but rested her forehead against Quinn’s. She should have been worried that Quinn still hadn’t responded, but she figured since she hadn’t pulled away she wasn’t completely opposed to it. She pressed her lips against Quinn’s again, ecstatic when this time Quinn reacted moving her lips equally as lightly against her own. She felt Quinn’s hand cup her cheek, and she softly brought one of her own to the blonde’s arm. It was everything she dreamed it would be.

Eventually they broke apart, panting from the lack of oxygen.

“I think now would be the time to tell you...” Rachel started nervously “I’m kinda in love with you.”

“Rachel...I don’t...I can’t do this.” Quinn said, her voice breaking.

And suddenly, everything she was feeling was the exact opposite of how she had dreamed it would be.

--
Quinn had never wanted to run from a situation as badly as she did in this current moment. But she didn’t. Instead, she was pacing back and forth whilst Rachel was huddled on her bed, her knees tucked under her chin, tears threatening to fall, trying to explain why exactly she couldn’t be with the most beautiful girl she’d ever seen.

“You make me feel things that I was never supposed to feel! Don’t you understand?” Quinn said exasperated “This...thing... between us is challenging everything I’ve ever believed, everything my family told me! I was never supposed to fall in love with you!”

“So what? You’re scared is that it? Or are you ashamed to be with me? I thought we had gotten past this, Quinn.”

“Absolutely not!” Quinn said, kneeling down at Rachel’s feet, a difficult task with her huge belly. “This isn’t about that.”

“So what is it about! I understand if you don’t feel the same but just tell me, Quinn! Don’t make excuses!” Her tears were now falling freely, and she couldn’t help but feel pathetic.

“I just said I’m in love with you, Rachel.” Quinn whispered sadly, bring her hand to rest on top of Rachel’s. “But I can’t be with you.”

“Why Quinn?! I don’t understand why!” Rachel yelled, pulling her hand from Quinn’s.

“Because! I’m in such a terrible situation right now! I’m pregnant! The baby is coming in a month. I’ve only just decided what I’m going to do with her, and Puck won’t leave me alone about being there for her! Finn still hates me, and probably won’t ever stop. And on top of that, my mother wants me to move back in with her.”

“What?” Rachel asked, eyes widening. All of a sudden she had a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. She was going to lose Quinn. She’d move back in with her mother, who would without a doubt brainwash her back into being the perfect daughter. Quinn would never speak to her again.

“She called me this morning. Apparently my dad was cheating on her or something, so she left him. She wants me to move back.” Quinn now had also started crying. “I’m sorry Rachel, I really am. The timing of this absolutely sucks.” She stood up, cupping the girls cheeks with both her hands. “I love you, I really do. And I want to be with you. But I can’t, not now.” She pressed a kiss to Rachel’s forehead. “I need to sort out my own life, so that I don’t ruin yours.” She pulled away from the smaller girl, making her way to the door, tears still running down her face. She was stopped by the sound of Rachel’s voice.

“Quinn” she called, then paused before speaking again. “Do you think maybe one day, when the world doesn’t suck so much we can finally be together?” Quinn gave her a small smile.

“Absolutely.”
