I'm surprised Olsen didn't get a nod for either. MMMM wasn't the best film ever but she really was captivating in it. I think her performance got one of the biggest emotional reactions from me this year.
Ehh, I think she's still in the race but I really expected her to be more like Jennifer Lawrence. She got a lot of her thunder stolen by Felicity Jones (who's been winning more of those breakthrough awards).
admittedly, I had some issues with the movie, but I loved her in it.
she's been in several films this year. chalet girl, which I expected to be really awful but she was charming in it. and she's also in hysteria, albatross & page eight.
I think there are other factors besides felicity & rooney when it comes to lizzie losing some buzz (I loved her in MMMM. she was amazing) I think fox searchlight isn't putting in as much effort with her campaign as they are with fassbender & shame, idk.
I thought she did fine in Like Crazy but the popularity of that movie/performance just doesn't register for me. I definitely thought Olsen would be the more obvious newcomer this season, especially cause she got the bulk of the rave reviews at Sundance (even though Jones won the award). And just the critical reception to her performance seemed so much bigger than Jones'.
It's definitely not as showy, but Jennifer Lawrence made it to the Oscars last year with a low budget film and an unshowy role.
Buzz was really strong for Lizzie around September. I remember thinking she had it locked up. I really love them both, I don't know. They're really different roles in different films. I try not to compare. It's a shame that in a year with several breakout actresses, it doesn't really look like one is going to make it - maaaaybe Rooney. And Tilda's looking pretty strong, so there's that.
I wasn't talking about the role or the movie, just the campaign behind it.
My biggest disappointment this season is that Saoirse's work in "Hanna" isn't getting the attention it deserves.
