You can make cute full-sized or half-sized loaves of challah bread, if you are comfortable braiding dough. Here's my favorite recipe.
Challah Bread for the Bread Machine: New Improved Recipe!
3/4 cup milk (or water... I used water in the last batch because we were low on milk & it was just fine) 2 eggs 3 tablespoons butter, cut up into nuggets or softened 3 1/4 cup bread flour 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoon yeast
Egg wash: One egg yolk One tablespoon cold water
Mix on dough setting in bread machine. Divide dough into three equal parts. Roll each piece of dough into ropes about 12 inches long. Braid, cover with dish towel & let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes. (I turned the oven on for a minute then turned it off & put the bread in there, since our house is pretty cold right now.) Brush with a mixture if one egg yolk & one tablespoon cold water (sprinkle with poppy seeds if so inclined, but I don't because my partner doesn't like them, and I think they can distract from the delicious softness of this bread). Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes.
Even two days later this bread is soft, sweet and delicious, perhaps in part because it's been stored in a ziplock bag.
I think wrapping it in plastic wrap would be fine, or get festive colored cellophane and wrap it so that it's tied on top.
