This I Believe

First off, the booing WAS distasteful...THIS I BELIEVE!

Secondly, however distasteful, GEORGE HOPKINS, (NOT THE KIDS) had it coming. While I understand he was looking out for the safety of the kids, other corps prior made due just fine. He embarassed those kids inexcusably...THIS I BELIEVE!

Thirdly, those of you who absolutely protest voice amplification in DCI should be allowed that right as an American...THIS I BELIEVE!

Next, those of you who sit there and protest those that protest voice amplification should be ashamed. It is everyone's right to an opinion, whether you agree with it or not...THIS I BELIEVE!

And, the 2 point deduction should have stuck. Corps before the Cadets marched without complaint, AND there were 9 corps straight before the intermission that had no such beef with the way the field was painted. George Hopkins thinks that he and the Cadets deserve better than the rest of DCI...THIS I BELIEVE!

Also, "multiple focus audio" is a load of crap. This is Drum Corps International. The typical Division I drum corps is divided into 5 basic sections: the drum major(s), the hornline, the drumline, the pit, and the colorguard. There is no Speech and Debate section. The Bluecoats and Carolina Crown found VERY tasteful ways to use BRIEF snippets of speech to help their show. I, for one, don't need explaining to how a drum corps works, and why it is that they play their instruments. If I'm sitting in the stands at one of these events, chances are that I already know...THIS I BELIEVE!

Finally, all this said, this is a great year in DCI. There are some very fine corps out there this year, from the Cadets on down through Pioneer. Santa Clara Vanguard was traditionally amazing. They don't have to use voice to convey to the audience just how much the activity means to them. Carolina Crown had the best, richest, most majestic hornline I think I've ever heard. I wish them the absolute best. Phantom Regiment was viually and percussively stunning. Enough said. The Bluecoats delivered a well-crafted story through both clever arrangements and an incredible hornline and colorguard. The Cavaliers, while I feel were not up to par this year, still showed great prowess with difficult drill and that signiature "Cavaliers" sound. The Blue Devils brought that traditional "cool" attitude to the field, and that was all she wrote. They excited with amazing percussion, an equally amazing color guard, and an even more amazing hornline. Say what you will about the Cadets, but their show was still deservedly well within "Top 3" status (before the penalty). The hornline was amazing as usual, and the visual package was stimulating and rich. Without the voice-overs; however, I would not undertsand the theme "This I Believe"...THIS I BELIEVE!
