On the bus to work, Ianto sank deep into thought. The Captain’s voice was in his head, saying the same thing over and over again. But Ianto couldn’t remember him saying it.
“All that self-destructive stuff: smoking, drinking, hurting yourself? You wouldn’t be behaving like that if you were my responsibility.”
But he’d stopped his da from belting him. Why do that? His da belting him was the only thing that might work. Unless, maybe the Captain meant to do it himself? He was stronger than Ianto’s da. He could make it hurt more.
He got off the bus. He was two minutes walk from Tesco’s now. He walked slowly. He didn’t want to go. His mind was on the Captain.
“Hello my boy.”
Ianto’s head snapped up. The Captain?
No, it was John. He was leaning against his big flashy car with a big flashy smile on his face.
“Hop in,” he said.
Ianto hesitated. “I…I should get to work.”
John straightened and looked at him. “Are you refusing me?”
“No, but…”
John stepped towards him. “You promised you’d obey me.”
Ianto looked away. “Yeah, but…”
John gripped his arm. “Get in the car. Now.”
Ianto tried to step back but John tightened his grip and pulled his ear close to his mouth. “Do as you’re told right now or I will get angry and God will be disappointed. You don’t want that, do you?”
“No, but…”
John bent Ianto’s arm back painfully. “Then get in the car,” he growled. He pressed his thumb to Ianto’s lips. His skin tasted bitter. Ianto felt a cloud descending over him.
He lowered his eyes. “Yes, sir,” he said.
John released him and opened the car door for him. “In you get, gorgeous.”
Ianto swallowed and got in the car. John shut the door behind him, then got in the driver’s seat.
“So, beautiful, where do you want to go?”
Ianto looked down. “Wherever you want to take me, Sir.”
John patted his knee. “Now, that’s a better attitude. I know, we’ll go back to the beach and you can make up for your disobedience.” He started the car and began to drive.
Ianto sat back in his seat and stared out of the window. This was what God wanted him to do. He couldn’t disobey God. Da always said obedience to God was the most important thing. He reached up and took his cross out of his shirt. He fingered the gold. It was warm from being against his skin. It comforted him. He knew he’d always had it. His Da had bought it for him when he’d been born.
What did God want him to do? John said the Captain was from the devil but Ianto didn’t feel bad or scared when he looked at him. He felt safe. It was like getting a hug from his da.
But maybe that was what the devil was like? Maybe the bad people made you think they were good and safe and that’s how they got to you.
John put a hand on his thigh. “Get out of the car.”
Ianto realised the car had stopped. He looked out of the window. They were at the beach. He got out of the car and stood waiting for John to tell him what to do now.
John joined him, took his hand and led him down the beach. Halfway down to the water, he stopped and looked at him.
“You’re a bit over dressed for the beach, my boy,” he said with a grin.
Ianto didn’t say anything.
John stood back and crossed his arms. “Strip.”
Ianto swallowed and looked around.
John laughed. “There’s no one here but me. You promised you’d obey me, didn’t you?”
“Yes, but…”
“Then do as you’re told.”
Ianto took a deep breath and unzipped his jacket. John smiled approvingly. Ianto felt himself trembling as he let his jacket fall to the sand. Then it was his work shirt. He pulled it over his head and let it drop too. He was shivering now. Newport weather wasn’t actually sunny, never mind warm. At least it wasn’t raining.
John was still watching him. He toed off his shoes, then leaned down and peeled off his socks. He wriggled his bare toes in the sand.
“The pants. Quick now.”
Ianto swallowed hard and undid his trousers. He pushed them down.
“Stop,” somebody was calling across to them. Ianto looked around and his eyes widened. It was the Captain.
John tensed. “He’s mine, Jack. You keep away.”
The Captain didn’t speak to John. He stepped up to Ianto, leaned down and picked up his clothes.
“Get dressed,” he said. His voice was firm but gentle. “You’re late for work.”
Ianto did as the Captain told him, feeling John’s eyes on him. The Captain didn’t speak, just waited for Ianto to get dressed.
“Come on. I’ll give you a lift,” he said when Ianto was dressed.
Ianto began to follow the Captain. John rushed after him, grabbed his arm and looked hard at him. “You’re disobeying me, Ianto. I’ll have to punish you.”
Ianto blinked at him. “My da will be cross if I skip work.”
John laughed. “If I have to punish you, it’ll be worse than anything your da would do to you.”
Ianto frowned and glanced over at the Captain. The Captain looked back at him and nodded just a little. “Ianto, you know what your da wants you to do.”
Ianto swallowed and took his arm away from John. “I’ve got to go to work.”
The Captain started walking again and Ianto followed him.
The Captain only had a small car, not at all flashy like John’s. The Captain grinned at him. “Not exactly flash, sorry. She’s a rental. My other car’s sort of…locked away right now.”
Ianto didn’t say anything, just got in and sat back. The Captain began to drive. The silence hung for a long time. The Captain seemed to be waiting for him to speak.
Ianto felt weird, like his head was clearing a bit. Finally, he spoke. “Why did I do that?”
“Do what?”
“Why did I get undressed just because he told me to?”
The Captain sighed. “Has he given you anything, Ianto? Pills or…anything?”
“He’s got these amazing cigarettes. They’re like…the best I’ve ever smoked. They make me feel amazing.”
“I wouldn’t smoke any more of those if I were you.”
“You sound like my old man. You gonna lecture me about the dangers of smoking?”
“What would your dad do if he caught you smoking?”
“Threaten to belt me.”
“Threaten?”
“Yeah. He won’t do it though. He never does. He doesn’t care.”
“And you think if he belts you, that’d show he cares?”
Ianto shrugged and didn’t speak. He could feel Jack’s attention on him but he didn’t reply. He didn’t know how to.
