Ianto sat in his room and waited for Da to come up. He’d heard that man leave a little while ago and he knew it was only a matter of time before Da came up and belted him. Then he’d have to show John the marks. He didn’t want to do that.
There was a knock on his door and it opened. His da came in. Ianto stood up. He would face this like a man.
His da wasn’t holding his tad-cu’s belt. Maybe he was going to make Ianto fetch it.
“Ianto, we need to talk.”
Ianto didn’t say anything. His da faced him and folded his arms. “I can’t have you treating guests like that. Your behaviour lately has disappointed me. I’ve raised you to do better than that.”
“All right, all right, Da. Can’t you get on with it?”
“Get on with what?”
“You’re gonna belt me, aren’t you? I guess…I deserve it.”
“Maybe you do but…Jack doesn’t think it would help you.”
Ianto frowned. “Jack?”
“He’s a good man. He’s helped us before. Helped you when you hit your head coming out of school when you were ten.”
“Da?”
“And he helped you when you got sick when you were fourteen. He…made you better and he brought you home to me, both times.”
“I…don’t remember, Da.”
“I know you don’t but…it’s true.”
Ianto didn’t know what to say. His da took a seat on Ianto’s desk chair. “Ianto, I admit, I’ve…struggled being your da. I don’t…understand you a lot of the time but…I’ve always…well you’re my son and I just want the best for you.”
“I know, Da. I’m…sorry for…being difficult.”
“Well, if you try to get on a bit better with me, I’ll try for you, okay?”
Ianto looked down. “Yeah. Da…if you belt me, I…won’t fight. I’ll…take it like a man.”
Da looked at him. “I know you will. You’re my son.”
He turned and left. Ianto sat on his bed and thought. Jack had helped them before? Ianto didn’t remember. He strained his memory back to when he’d been fourteen. It had been a tough year. He remembered skipping school loads, smoking, drinking and generally being a pain in the arse. He remembered fighting with his da constantly, getting threatened with the belt, his da hanging the belt on his door and he remembered Rhiannon moving out.
But then it all got hazy. He kind of remembered running off somewhere and then he remembered dark streets and being scared and then it was all a blank. The next thing he remembered was waking up the day after his fifteenth birthday and Da making a fuss of him. It was weird. Normally, he had the best memory but not about that.

In the morning, Ianto got up on his own for work and headed out before it was light. He ambled towards the bus stop, wanting John to come and pick him up. He never knew when John would turn up but he found himself wanting him constantly.
He reached the bus stop and took out his cigarettes. His mind still on John, he slid out a cigarette and put it in his mouth. He held his lighter up to it, flicked it on and stopped. He could see a flash of blue.
He fumbled with his lighter and it dropped on the pavement. He was suddenly back four years ago, in that quiet corner of the school playground, smoking and seeing that flash of blue.
The Captain. The Captain had been watching him.
“All right, come out. I know you’re watching me,” he called into the darkness.
There was a moment’s pause, then somebody stepped out into the dull orange light of the street lamp. It was that man. Jack. The Captain.
The Captain smiled at him. “Hey, solider.”
Ianto scowled and leaned down to pick up his lighter. He gripped it tightly but didn’t quite dare to light his cigarette. “Why the hell are you following me?”
“I promised your dad I’d look after you.”
Ianto scoffed. “What can you do to look after me?”
“I’ve looked after you before.”
Ianto flicked his lighter over and over. “John says you’re evil.”
The Captain raised his eyebrows slightly. “Do you believe that?”
“Dunno. You hit him. Why’d you do that if you’re the good guy?”
The Captain looked away for a moment. “I’m sorry about that.” He looked back. “I lost my temper. Listen, Ianto. You can’t trust John. He’s trying to hurt you. He wants to…possess you.”
Ianto lit his cigarette. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he scoffed. “John’s here to look after me. He’s my guardian angel.”
“He’s messing with your head, Ianto, getting you into trouble.”
Ianto inhaled deeply and laughed. “He’s not getting me into anything. I can handle myself.”
“Oh really? So, you got that earring of your own free will, did you?”
Ianto’s finger went to his earring and he frowned. “I…I got it for him.”
“And what else have you done for him, Ianto?”
“I…”
“And who should you be doing things for?”
Ianto tutted. “For you, I suppose?”
“No, Ianto. For yourself.”
Ianto dropped his head and flicked ash on the pavement. He could feel the Captain watching him.
“I’ll be keeping my eye on you. I promised your dad.”
Ianto didn’t reply.
The Captain walked towards him. “Remember who your family is, Ianto. That’s the most important thing, the people who care about you.”
Ianto still didn’t reply.
The Captain started walking past him. “You’d better put that cigarette out. I’ve told you before about self-destructive behaviour.”
Ianto’s head snapped up but the Captain was already disappearing off into the darkness. Ianto put his cigarette out and headed to work.
