She doesn’t want to admit she still cares about him. The very thought of saying it out loud makes her feel weak so she pretends she’s not jealous of the scene in front of her. She tells herself that he’s just playing the girl at the kiddie table. It makes her feel somewhat better, and at the same time gives her another reason to not want him.
She’s been watching them in the hall, staring at them at lunch, and all but stalking them as they head to his Xterra every day. This she tells herself is crazy, but she just can’t seem to stop. They seem to be everywhere she is, so it’s not her fault she sees them all the time.
She hates the way he kisses the girl. It seems so sweet and it makes her remember when. These are things Veronica doesn’t need right now. The thoughts of her and Logan when he was so gentle with her keep popping in her head at different times of the day now. She hates even thinking of how it was because she misses it and that is something she refuses to admit out loud.
When he sees her watching him, he usually smirks but Hannah never sees him. She never sees the looks Veronica gives him or the winks he throws back at her when she rolls her eyes in disgust. The younger girl is living in a dream world, and Veronica wonders how she’s managed to block all the sign language that’s been going on between herself and Logan.
When Weevil catches her at her locker staring at the sugary sweet duo he can’t help but say something to her about it.
“He’s playing her V.” He whispers in her ear.
She smiles back up at him and shrugs, “I know.”
“Do you?” He questions crossing his arms and as he leans against the locker.
“Of course.” She nods but she knows Weevil senses her lie.
“Stop stalking him babe.” Weevil tells her. “Just let him do his thing.”
“I do not stalk.” She speaks back overdramatically.
When Weevil rolls his eyes at her she lets out a sigh, “Sure he’s playing her?” She questions and suddenly she realizes how weak she sounds. Like the old Veronica, the one she wants to forget.
“You think he’s being real?”
“Maybe he just wants to try his hand at normal.” She suggests watching as Weevil thinks it over.
“Nah, he’s using the kid.” He shrugs. “Get over the rich boy V; you’re better off without him.”
Veronica knows that Weevil is right. She understands that a life without Logan does seem much easier. So she decides that maybe she should start ignoring him. It would be in her best interest to just let it all go. She has cases to solve, a dog to feed and a best friend who needs her at his games.
She goes for a whole week ignoring him. When she passes him in the hall she simply looks the other way. It isn’t easy of course, but she knows it’s for the best. Her life is already so complicated, letting him back in would only hurt her again. So when people talk about how adorable Hannah and Logan are she tries to shrug it off.
It’s in the bathroom after a very long day that it finally hits her. She’s standing at the mirror looking at her reflection and suddenly he’s there too. She jumps slightly when she realizes he’s standing behind her, his arms crossed as he studies her.
“Can I help you with something?” She questions backing up against the sink.
“Perhaps.” He nods and then smirks.
It’s his trademark smirk and she loves it so much she hates it. When she clears her throat he merely sighs and waits for her to speak. “Do I have to use my mind reading skills to figure this one out?” She questions.
“First you stare at me like I’ve got the plague, now you ignore me like I don’t exist. Shall we talk about this game your playing?” He asks in that low voice that only he can do so well.
“Who said I was playing games?”
“Me.”
“Get over yourself Logan.” She mutters.
“After you.” He grins. “Really Veronica it’s driving you insane isn’t it? Watching me with Hannah, you just can’t stand it.”
“You are playing that girl Logan! You’re going to hurt her in the end, don’t you see that? She has feelings and you’re going to step all over them!”
“Who said I was playing her?” He smiles. “Maybe I really like her.”
“Yay You!” She speaks throwing her arm in the air in a cheerleader move. It hits her how much she sounds like the jealous ex that she is and she cringes slightly at the mere thought.
He steps closer to her, practically pinning her against the sink and she feels her stomach flop. This can’t be happening, it wasn’t in the plans. She was supposed to ignore him, why won’t he let her ignore him?
“You had Duncan.” He reminds her almost whispering. “You dumped me and went back to Duncan and that was just fine. Now I’m with someone and you can’t handle it.”
She pushes him back slightly and lets out a deep breath, “I don’t care what you do!”
“This is me Veronica! I can tell when you’re lying.” He reminds her and she realizes he’s telling the truth. When did he become a detective? He’s too good at reading her; no one is supposed to be that good at detecting her emotions.
“Fine Logan! You know what you’re right, you’re always right! I just can’t bare the thought of watching you and Hannah together. It just breaks my little heart in pieces, pieces I tell you!” She’s so over the top she’s sure he’s going to yell again, but instead he just laughs.
“Finally some truth from those cute little lips.” He grins. “Was that really so hard to admit?”
When she rolls her eyes she realizes he’s still smiling and moving closer to her again. This time she feels herself backing up into the wall. He doesn’t stop moving and finally she’s totally pinned in, her eyes staring up at him. “I, I need to go.” She whispers.
”No you don’t.” Logan shrugs resting one arm above her on the wall. “You don’t want to go anywhere.” He leans in and suddenly she can feel his breath against her ear, “It’s just you and me Veronica, you and me.”
“If you start singing Lifehouse I’m out of here.” She warns trying to lighten the mood. She has to get herself out of this, away from him. She needs to move, but she can’t and suddenly his smell is all she can smell and his eyes are all she can see. She feels herself falling back into that deep pit she was sure she had climbed out of.
“I’ve missed you.” He speaks tenderly and then his lips are on hers. It’s gentle and unrushed. She thinks that maybe he’s as nervous as she is but that’s ok because she’s missed him and this just feels right. He pulls her closer and she feels her arms wrap around his neck.
She needs this, needs Logan even if they are a mistake. Suddenly he deepens the kiss and she can’t help but feel her body go weak. This is what she’s missed, what she never had with Duncan. The rush she feels is unbelievable, the connection is one she's tired of denying. They're both broken and battered but when she's with him she almost feels put back together.
When he finally pulls away he’s out of breath. His eyes are dark as smiles and leans into her, letting his forehead barely touch hers. “I’m sorry.” He whispers. “I was out of control.”
“Then or now?” She asks trying to catch her breath.
“Before, when you ended things.” He sighs. “I’m sorry.”
She’s biting her lip as she gazes up at him, “And now?”
“I need you.” He admits, “God help me but I need you Veronica Mars.”
“He better help us both then.” She whispers with a smile. “I’ve missed you too Logan.”
When he steps away from her he drops his head, “I should go.” He mumbles and then looks back at her. “I need to talk to Hannah.”
“And say what exactly?” Veronica questions.
“I can’t keep hurting her.” He shrugs honestly. “We’ll find another way.”
“Of course we will.” Veronica promises him. “I’ll figure something out.”
“You always do.” He smiles as he leans in once more and brushes his lips against her forehead.
She watches him closely as he moves way from her and moves toward the door. When he disappears she lets out a deep breath and feels a smile play on her lips. She gives herself a moment and then heads for the door herself. When she walks back out in the hall she spots Weevil staring at her.
She doesn’t bother trying to avoid him, because he’s walking beside her before she even realizes it.
“Now who’s stalking?” She asks.
“You caved.” He almost growls.
“Excuse?”
“Echolls heads out the girl’s bathroom all flushed, and then you follow.” He explains. “You caved.”
“What if I did?”
“Stupid rich boys.” He mutters making her smile.
“Awww I think deep down you actually like him.” She teases. “You two should so be BFF’s.”
“Not amused V not amused at all.” Weevil groans as he walks away.
She shakes her head as she watches Weevil stomp off. In the distance her eye catches Logan and Hannah. She can see the young girl crying and she watches as Logan tries to calm her down. The girl suddenly looks up and sees Veronica watching and then shoves past Logan bolting through the crowd of people. Logan drops his head and Veronica feels her heart sting slightly for him. So much for a happy reunion she thinks, but it is a reunion and for now that’s good enough for her.
