CHARACTER
NAME: Chase Stein
AGE: 18
FANDOM/MEDIUM: Runaways (Comic)
TIMELINE PERIOD: After the Dead End Kids digest, or after they return from the past.
ABILITIES: In Chase's words, his special power is "a poor upbringing," which really just means he knows how to kick ass when he needs to. In addition to this, he has a psychic connection to a deinonychus named Old Lace. So if he doesn't like you, watch out for dino-maulings.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND: Spoilers to follow.
Chase was born to Victor and Janet Stein, a pair of evil scientists working for an evil supergroup named The Pride. He was an accident on their part, but Victor and Janet brought their son up with the greatest of love, even going so far as to give up their shot at eternal life, instead pledging they'd give it to him instead. They failed, however, when it came to showing that love. As the son of two technical geniuses, he was expected to be bright, but Chase was always an underachiever when it came to grades. And generally, when he got bad grades, his father would hit him. This never made him try harder, so Chase grew up in a rather abusive household.
When Chase hit the tender age of 17, he and the other children of The Pride discovered their parents evil organization and promptly decided to run away. With the knowledge of their heritage, they slowly uncovered their own abilities and resolved to stop The Pride and its wrongdoings. Together they destroyed their parents, and on the way Chase fell for his teammate, Gertrude Yorkes. But with The Pride gone, L.A. was overrun by second-rate criminals who had been too afraid to step on The Pride's turf before.
The Runaways didn't call themselves superheroes, and they didn't wear costumes to hide their identities. They stopped crime because that was the only thing to do. And it was all going well, until Gertrude Yorkes died fighting the good fight. Her death changed Chase completely, and he spent a long time away from the group, trying to find a way to get her back. He was bent on his goal, almost to the point of human sacrifice, but in the end he couldn't do it. He rejoined the team after trying to sacrifice himself, changed but still the Chase they knew.
Since then Chase has been an active member of the team, but he is still adamantly in love with Gert and would bring her back in a heartbeat if he knew a way.
CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
Chase Stein is the team's token "dumb guy" right off the bat. He's generally there to provide comic relief, and he usually doesn't think before he speaks. However, there's a lot more to Chase, and he shouldn't be underestimated.
Chase doesn't pretend to be anyone he's not. He makes stupid comments and before Gert he shamelessly flirted with pretty girls given the opportunity. He's not a sweet guy, and he doesn't try to be. He's been hardened by corporal punishment and he lets himself be brash and blunt if the situation doesn't call for extra sensitivity, in which case he just keeps his mouth shut. Deep down, Chase hates himself. His parents told him he was an idiot, and he believes and accepts it, but he still wonders what it would have been like to be the bookish type, falling in with his parents' expectations.
There's another side to Chase that we first see after Gertrude's death. It's not a side that he necessarily hides, but he knows it's not pretty and he'd rather his friends didn't know him as that person. Perhaps taking after his parents, Chase's rage turns him into a merciless, cold bastard. A few years before the events of Runaways, it leads Chase to kill someone, but after his time with the team, he can no longer bring himself to that. It's fair to say that his time with the others has softened him, but that's only because the only home he knew otherwise was the one he shared with killers for parents. With the other runaways he's more than an idiot, and that's what makes him comfortable being himself around them.
WORLD: Chase comes from a Marvel-616 universe Los Angeles, which is basically present-day L.A. with the existence of superheroes and mutants, but they're mostly based out of New York.
OCCUPATION: I'm in the firm belief that Chase would make an incredibly attractive blacksmith.

THIRD PERSON:
"ALL SYSTEMS FULLY OPERATIONAL, MASTER STEIN."
"Thanks."
"PERHAPS IT'S TIME TO GET SOME REST, MASTER STEIN."
Chase pursed his lips and flipped his pocketknife in the air once more before catching it and snapping it closed, slipping it into his back pocket. He stretched his arms out and folded them behind his head, leaning back and just letting the silence sit.
The silence was nice. He liked to think these days, it let him listen and hear the memories he had of Gert, of the girl he still loved. She'd have something to say. He wasn't witty or smart enough to think of what it would be, but she wouldn't let it get quiet. She'd talk, and he'd listen and do his best to understand, and she'd be secretly thrilled when he did. And he liked that lack of silence when she was there to fill it, but now he liked nothing more than hearing nothing where there used to be Gertrude Yorkes.
"Hey. Chase."
Chase opened his eyes, looking around at Victor as he peeked into the leapfrog.
"Yo, amigo," Chase said, lying his head back down against his arms.
"Chase, I told you, don't call me that."
Chase ignored him. It was kind of funny to hear Victor annoyed. "So what's up?"
"Molly's starting a game of Monopoly. She wanted to know if you wanted to play. Well, actually she said you'd better play because you've been a big boring butthead."
Chase smirked. "Sure," he said. "You playing?"
"No. Molly said I couldn't."
"Well you do that weird calculation thing in your junior-Ultron brain. Mol doesn't play a game if she can't win it."
Victor rolled his eyes. Chase knew he didn't like anyone mentioning his "father," but that's what made it fun. He pushed himself up out of his chair, and Victor turned to go, but not before waiting by the entrance of the leapfrog to give Chase a shock just big enough to hurt.
"Dude! I will bring out the fistigons on your ass if you try something like that again!"
Victor ran off. Chase shouted after him for a moment, but didn't chase him, settling for smiling to himself and setting off to join Molly's game of Monopoly.
FIRST PERSON:
I think Old Lace is getting a little wagon-sick. But that might just be me... either way, you guys better stay clear. You don't want dino-puke all over you. Believe me, it stinks. And if she pukes, I'll puke.
So give her some space.
