SACRIFICE

“Damnit!”

Steve performed a maneuver that he hoped would free him, but the Angle Man’s shaft of energy sliced through his plane, causing a hasty ejection.

Unfortunately, the next beam of energy shredded his parachute.

Wonder Woman leaped from her invisible plane, riding the air currents as she grabbed Steve.

“Thanks for the save, Angel,” he said, heart pounding.

“My pleasure, Steve.” She dodged another energy beam. “Plane, dive!”

The plane reached them and they scrambled aboard, Steve taking the wheel and Wonder Woman riding on the wing, her Golden Lasso glittering in the sun as they dove toward the mountaintop where Angle Man was standing.

Wonder Woman’s aim was true, the Lasso falling over Angle Man’s shoulders.

“Damnit, woman! You and this fuckin’ rope!”

Wonder Woman laughed as she tightened the Lasso.

Another villain thwarted.

Diana walked past the conference room with an armful of file folders.

“Man, did you see the Amazon at work?” Greg asked.

“I did. She’s amazing!” Del’s voice.

“She sure saved Trevor’s bacon.” Diana could hear the smirk in Sully’s voice.

“Where’s his self-respect?” Greg’s tone was disgusted.

“You mean the bride’s carry when she saved him from falling?” Sully snorted.

“Not much of a Top Gun, huh?”

“Maybe a Top Wuss.”

Laughter spilled out of the conference room.

Diana frowned as she clutched her folders. Really…!

“Hello, Lieutenant.”

She nodded at Aaron Krazniak, who went into the room.

Frowning once more, she returned to the office.

“We welcome Wonder Woman and her escort, Major Steve Trevor!”

The crowd applauded, cheering as Diana and Steve appeared, he in dress blues and she in star-spangled skirt and cape, accenting her regular costume. He had offered his arm and she had taken it, willing to accept this Man’s World convention.

The elite of Boston was gathered at this garden party in the backyard of the Wentworth mansion overlooking the harbor.

Diana’s cape swirled as she moved, the party-goers eager to see more of her.

Steve moved through the crowd as diplomatically as possible, accustomed to his escort role.

Diana frowned. Steve should not have to stay in her shadow. He was her equal, not a lapdog or just a pretty arm ornament like those pilots thought. It pained her to hear their scorn.

“Wonder Woman! You are looking quite lovely!”

The matronly woman had stars in her eyes as she reached out to shake Diana’s hand.

“Thank you, Ms…”

“Martina Collinsworth. Just call me Tina.”

“Ah, yes…”

“I can’t tell you how my girls adore you! You’re quite the role model, my dear.”

“Thank you. Young girls should realize their full potential.”

“You inspire them.”

Diana smiled, another woman coming up to them.

“What a perfect pair you and the major make!” said the newcomer.

“Thank you.” Pride filled Diana as she watched her Beloved circulate, charming everyone.

“We were discussing Wonder Woman being a role model,” Tina said. “Oh, Princess, this is Anne Halliday.”

The middle-aged woman nodded a stylishly-coiffed head. “I am a great admirer, Wonder Woman.”

“You and women of your station work well with the wealth available to you to help others.”

Anne beamed. “Thank you! I’d like your input on a scholarship for girls that I’d like to implement.”

“Certainly. You can get in touch with me via the Government Liaison Office at M.I.T.”

Diana handed Anne a card and regally swept on to a new group.

Diana observed the sun’s position, figuring that she had about an hour left before the party started winding down. She was tiring of what Steve called ‘glad-handing’, but duty called.

She stood by the buffet, trying to decide between raspberry sugar or frosted lemon cookies when she heard her Beloved’s voice.

“Yes, the XJ-266 is going to be tested by Hal Jordan starting next week.”

“What a coup!” The woman speaking was sleek, silky and around twenty. Her companion was an older man of around fifty with a silver mane.

“Isn’t that what you used to do, Major?” he asked.

“I still keep up my flying hours.”

“I bet you’d love to take that baby through her paces.”

“Yes, well, I’ve got a lot of important work to do at the Liaison Office.”

The man snorted. “Babysitting a bunch of geeks?”

“Ah, but they do important work.” Diana could hear the smile in his voice.

“But you’d rather be testing that jet.” The man’s voice was shrewd.

“I…wouldn’t mind, certainly!”

Diana could hear the longing in Steve’s voice.

He could have concentrated on flying but had chosen to stay in military intelligence, guaranteed more opportunities to help her on missions. He enjoyed the ‘cloak-and-dagger’ of the assignments but she knew where his heart lay.

Diana gazed out at the sea, reminded of home on this sparkling day.

“Wonder Woman, is everything all right?”

Claudia Wentworth, her hostess, looked at her with concern.

“Ah, it will be soon, Goddess willing.”
