Chumps

If you recall, I have not been able to install Windows XP on my 2nd computer, Chump. I tried getting another copy of Windows XP, but the same file copying errors happened regardless of whether I copied all the setup files to the hard drive. This kinda scared me because it made me think that it might be a problem with my hard drive, which I don't feel like replacing right now. So I gave up on Chump for a few weeks.

"NO...bad RAM, bad! Now go sit in the corner to think about what you have done."

Then I had a revelation: Maybe the problem was with one of the RAM DIMMs. If this didn't turn out to be the problem, I wouldn't know what else to do. So by systematically removing RAM chips, one at a time, and then booting it up, I found the offending chip. It turned out to be PC133 type, which is incompatible with the other PC100 chips in Chump. So I threw it in Renegade Master to see if it would work there. I wasn't on it for more than a few minutes until it restarted itself. That chip is now useless. The past two nights, I have successfully installed Windows XP and countless Windows Updates on Chump. It seems to run okay, but the fact that Chump now only has 160MBs of RAM (128+32) seems to hinder the performance quite a bit. I'll look at buying 512MB in the form of one or maybe even two 256MB chips. In the future I hope to use Chump for: Regular backups of documents & system files on Renegade Master, a file sharing server (not sure what program/service to use though), and playing video files on our living room TV (requires PCI card with TV out). Once we get a roommate, I am moving Chump downstairs and buying a wireless card for it.

I sent in a resume and cover letter for another staff job on campus. I love where I work, and everyday I am reminded of that feeling, but I have some interesting reasons why I applied to a 8AM-5PM Monday-Friday job.
When I applied to a position that was one level up from mine, I was just a few months short on the 4 years experience they required. Now that several months have passed since then, I am curious as to whether I could get an interview for such a job.
The salary is $11 to $14 thousand more than my current job, which could be $600 more per month in the bank. If it wasn't for that, there is no way I would consider looking at a job like this. I don't need the money, but I know I could use it. This would be close to the average starting salary for graduates in my field.
My concerns with the job position is the hours and the new environment. It would be a pain getting up that early 5 days a week. It would require a change of sleeping habits and perhaps lifestyle. Also, I'm not sure I would do well in night classes that are held only 1-2 times a week since I think the more time I spend in the classroom, the better I learn. If I were tired in class, I think that is harder to deal with than being tired at work. I'm not sure how often I would be tired going into night classes though.

"The person we offered the job to turned it down..."

I noticed that the last open staff position for where I work was re-posted. So I won't be moving to getting Fridays & Saturdays off as soon as I thought. Oh well, I don't get looked down upon too much for the few times I've requested vacation time on the weekends. So it's not like I always have to work Saturdays.
