Those Poor Slugs

Apr 20, 2006 17:30

I had two dreams last night and both turned out to be true today, mostly. And fortunately neither of the dreams involved slugs. Instead they were about my day. I first woke up with the clarity of knowledge that I had just finished a couple hours of hiking and that I could sleep in. And later, I dreamed that I was so occupied with other tasks that I had failed to ever make an appearance at work. So with that, let me tell you about slugs.

I woke up over 11 hours ago. And it was already light out. I gathered a little breakfast and changed into hiking gear. And then left. Finding myself exactly on time in the Mt. Si parking lot, I finished gearing up and stood around as we all weighed our packs. 39lbs! I pulled out a liter of water and soon we were off. I began in the rear, as I tossed my extra liter into my car but soon I pulled into second position, though I'd slide back a bit when my 'turn' for a long break came. The first mile of trail had many slugs on it (see! They'd play a part in this tale). I hate slugs. And I hate crushing them even more. (shudder, one time slugs many slugs were moving across a bike path that I was riding.... ewwww) But now I think back to those poor blobs which were on the trail and decide that they still are creation and serve a purpose even in their squished state.

Besides a bit of nausea stirred when I was about 3/4 of the way, I kept a fairly consistent pace. I think I will have passed the climb, though I was two minutes late but I can account for those. I had never been to the top. I always turned around when faced with a rocky scramble which was accented by snow and ice. With the fine weather this morning (~60 and sunny), we went on to the top. Since I was behind many of the others, I came to the near top and looked ahead with my slightly blurred nearsightedness and saw a person in the distance. Trudging further in that direction, I learned I was heading wrong and followed the person back the way I should go. I still need to keep working, so that I can reach the top faster, but I did it with plenty of energy left.

After a significant break at the top, we finally made our way back down. Granted permission to again set my own pace, I set off at a rapid clip. A bit before half way, one of the rapid moving leaders caught up to me and no one else from the group was ever sighted. Eventually, we arrived back at the parking lot where I was permitted to depart.

Today was Teriyaki day! I rode in my co-worker's Z3 (65 and sunny, who wouldn't ride in a convertible?) to get Teriyaki for lunch. Though I ordered General Tao's, which only made me miss Zaw's even more, but it still is good just not Zaw's good.

Hiking time: 2 hours up + 1 hour break + 1 hour down = 4 hours that I'm going to have to stay late for.
