I was a little disappointed in last night's episode, as it was way too predictable and stretched plausibility even beyond the taffy-pull levels this series demands. Specifically Charlotte and Lurch surviving a flaming fireball plane crash with nary a scratch. That's some straight OWBN Elder shit right there. I bet they both blew Aegis an insane amount of times. :) I also booed at Collins letting his guard drop when Charlotte pulled her creepy "little girl lost" act. Come on, man, you KNOW she's the evil vampire pureblood leader. Why'd you go out like that?
Still, it wasn't bad. The special effects continue to improve, the story's accelerating, and Sticky is finally coming into his own as a worthy successor to Wesley Snipes. The finale next week looks totally badass, though again, I must chide Goyer for going the completely cliche' route. Did you have any doubt that it would come down to a catfight between Chase and Krista, or Blade and Marcus going at it with the swordplay?
Props to the use of the word "Conclave" to describe the vampire gathering, though. You KNOW Goyer is paying White Wolf some serious royalties for that.
Speaking of David Goyer, Comic Book Resources has an
extensive interview with him that discusses "Blade" and its future in depth. I have to call bullshit on a few of his points, specifically that Sticky is making Blade his own. Come on--if you watch his performance arc from the premiere until now, it gets better because he's consciously adopting more of Snipes' mannerisms, such as the little smiles after he dusts a vamp. That's why I like him more now...he's actually making his Blade seem more like the same person as the Snipes Blade, as opposed to a guy who dressed up as Blade for Halloween. ;) On the Michael Jai White question, this is proof that Goyer reads the Internets. I don't know how he can claim MJW has less personality, though--he's got
an incredibly varied resume and is very familiar with the comic book/hero genre. (To be fair, so does
Sticky himself.) I think having a more credible martial artist/fighter in the role would have helped the series get over its initial bumps in the road, and it's not like Blade is a character who is known for his scintillating wit and range of emotion. :)
Interestingly, Howard Chaykin's visual take on Blade for the upcoming comic
looks more like MJW than it does Wesley OR Sticky. Take from that what you will. :)
I hope the series does get picked up for a second season, though. It's really not bad, and I can't wait to see the unrated DVD collection. :)
