One of the things I do in Tanzania is to help visually impaired Muslim children enter education. The only blind school in the region is Christian, and that can obviously deter parents. A Muslim teacher from the school visits the families, often up to 6 hours away, to answer questions and assuage their fears. My task is to get the funding in place. It costs around $100 to arrange the initial meeting with the teacher, to get the child and an escort transported to the school, provided with uniforms, shoes, and every other item you need to live at a boarding school. We've so far helped 5 children join the school and all are thriving. Their family lives are very tough - they are often kept hidden away and living off scraps. When they join the school, they blossom. They get to mix with children their age in a nurturing environment where they are fed three times a day and receive an education. I've seen children change from shaking balls of nerves, to sporting huge smiles and doing cartwheels.

The next child being lined up is Saidi. His parents have concerns he will not be able to continue his Qur'anic Studies. Omari, who is the blind teacher, helped put their mind at ease. Omari sent some photos of the family to me via WhatsApp, including the one below. Behind the family, there is a poster of the African Heads of State, a poster of Yanga football team... and a poster of the World's Deadliest Warlords, featuring Osama Bin Laden. Omari was shocked when I told him what was behind him and he feels terrible that nobody told him. I find it amusing though.
