Well, last weekend's match was a disaster. Liverpool took the lead after three minutes with a lovely goal from Dirk Kuyt, but despite an overwhelmingly superior game and a multitude of opportunities, could not score again. This might not have been so had had they not let in two goals at the end of the game. A very disappointing result, which knocked us back into second place (on goal difference).
Midweek was only barely better. A Champions League game, at home, against Atletico Madrid, wherein we went behind and only scored off a penalty in injury time. From the match reports it seems that the referee waved off two other penalty situations, but after the game said that he shouldn't have given the late penalty. Incompetent refereeing is a real problem. So a 1-1 draw means that while the Reds are still top of their group, they are not yet assured advancement into the next route. One more win should seal that, but we'll have to wait.
This weekend, Liverpool plays host to West Bromwich Albion, a newly promoted team from the Midlands. WBA is one of the oldest teams in football, formed in 1878 and one of the original clubs in the Football League (established 1888). They've gone up and down in successes over the years, and are struggling somewhat in the Premiership. I'm expecting a win for Liverpool, especially since Torres should be back (if starting on the bench), which will put us back at the top of the table (if only for 24 hours).
The game is at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. I'll be watching at the Brewhouse and then heading to
Chomp and Stomp in Cabbagetown.
On Wednesday, Liverpool face Spurs again in the Carling Cup. This is supposed to be available on Setanta, so if I can get out of work you will find me at the Brewhouse from 2:30pm.
Go Reds! You'll never walk alone.
