I can haz wireless!
I went to the Rogers store this afternoon and exchanged my existing modem for their Gateway wireless router, installed it, and now I'm posting this from my couch with no USB cable required to connect my laptop to the modem. I guess this means I've finally joined the 21st century?
The side effect of this process was that in order to find a spot for the router that wasn't too close to the computer or any other electronic devices, as per the instructions in the manual (yes, I RTFM :) ), I had to rearrange my computer, monitor, speakers, and everything else computer-related that was on my desk. It looks like I have slightly more room over there now, though the sheer number of cables and electrical cords in that corner of my living room continues to scare me. I keep envisioning myself tripping over something and pulling everything crashing down on my head. (Well, the router is the only thing that's above my head over there, but pulling the computer off of my desk could be bad too. The only reason I haven't put it on the floor is because I need to see if the cables for my other peripherals are long enough.
The one problem is that the Ethernet cable that runs from the desktop to the router, as well as the cable input, are kind of in the way because they're not quite long enough to run along the floor and up the back of the bookcase. Fixing the problem with the cable will be easy, as Rogers supplied a splitter and extra cables with the router - I just have to hook them up. The Ethernet cable may be trickier. I may be able to dispense with it if it turns out that my desktop has a wireless card - I haven't looked yet. That's the next step, though for now I'm going to work on cleaning off my dining room table in preparation for having dinner with Eric tonight. :)
Oh, and for some reason my laptop can't find my printer even though the printer is connected to the desktop, which is in turn connected to the router. In fact, I don't seem to be able to access my desktop over the network, though that may be because I haven't actually changed any settings on the desktop just yet, and perhaps that's a necessary step.
In other news, I may have just witnessed the most *facepalm*-y moment in the history of television - Space is airing the Supernatural episode "Wishful Thinking", and they just got to a scene where a little boy overturns a car containing a bunch of other kids and starts yelling "Kneel before Todd!" And now Dean just told him that "With great power comes great responsibility." Oy.
