Tonight got off to a rough start. I left the office around 4:45 (as I usually do on Fridays when I have bowling) and got to Finch around 6. It would be a little tight, but I would make it on time. Until the announcement came over the P.A. system while the train was stopped between Lawrence and Eglinton stations:
"Attention customers on the Yonge-University-Spadina line. We are experiencing a delay southbound at our Eglinton station with an injury at track level. Emergency personnel are on the scene and service will resume as soon as possible. Shuttle buses will be available between Eglinton and Bloor stations."
Lather, rinse, repeat for 40 minutes. Then...
"Attention passengers. There is a signal malfunction north of Eglinton station. We're waiting for the train in front of us to move and then we will be entering Eglinton station. Shuttle buses will be available in the bus bay..."
So not only was there a jumper (apparently), the signals were out and everyone knows a subway operator can't just look ahead of him in the tunnel to see if he's about to run into another train.
Lovely. (Why do people always have to jump at rush hour?)
When the train finally pulled into Eglinton, I dashed upstairs to look for a taxi. There are usually about eight of them lined up on Yonge Street. Tonight - nothing. I called Mario to let him know what was going on, but got his voice mail. As I was leaving a message, I saw a taxi stop across the street to let someone out. New Yorkers would have been proud of me - I ran across the street and was waiting outside the cab for the passenger to get out. :) While I was in the cab, I managed to get hold of Randy and explained to him what was going on, and asked him if he could get two scoresheets from the league treasurer for me to declare my scores for the next two weeks (I wasn't sure if he would give them to me if I arrived after bowling had already started for the night. I'd be allowed to catch up so long as I was less than 15 mintues late, but you're supposed to pay to declare your scores before the first official ball is thrown.)
The cabbie asked me, "Should I take Eglinton?" Don't ask me. You're supposed to know the best routes to take to get anywhere. (This guy didn't even know where Thorncliffe Park was.) Then when we got to Eglinton and Bayview, same thing. He ended up taking Bayview, whereupon we got stuck in traffic. *headdesk* I suggested that we go over to Don Mills, and he got onto Millwood, which actually happens to run smack into Overlea Boulevard on the west side of the Leaside bridge (the bowling alley is at 45 Overlea). I threw $15 at him and ran downstairs, and had just enough time to change out of my work clothes and get my ball and shoes out of my locker. I opened my glasses case to put my glasses on... nada. I'd left them on the bookcase here at home, where I'd put them last weekend. *headdesk* So there I was, half-blind and with zero practice, and not having had anything to eat since 1:30 this afternoon, declaring my scores to be used for the next two weeks as well because I'm going to be in Atlanta and Montreal...
First game sucked. (Of course.) But after that, everything kind of came together: 131, 165, 214. (My first 200 of the year!) So I averaged 170 on the night (my league average at the moment is 163), so I won't have hurt my team, at least not for the second and third games.
I need a drink after all that.
